LOL I think if and when I get contacted by a big bad troll I might reply with some of these! From now on I am not going to get upset by what they say but I am going to give as much back! (YEAH!)

BUT to put on my serious hat again - I know I have been really upset by trolls in the past when I almost felt witch hunted - it got to the stage when I felt worried about logging into my Facebook account because every day there would be horrible messages left - and if I blocked one troll, I would receive another message from another troll. I did report them to FB but surprise surprise - nothing was done. Thankfully I haven't heard much from the trolls for a while - they only tend to rear their ugly heads when they see me win - so it proves they are just jealous!

I really feel for anyone on here who has been trolled - yes, it is upsetting, and yes, it can really hurt the victim both emotionally and psychologically. I really hope that MSE will find a way of banning these people from coming back on here via some sort of tracking.

Blue Girl, it may be that it was all just one Troll. And I agree with you totally. It's such a truly spiteful act. I say again that anyone who does this is a complete coward, who would never ever have the guts to be honest face to face. I believe they Troll from the safety of anonymity because in real life they are so inadequate that they need to do stuff like this to try and feel like they some power and control in their lives.

And yes, I do really feel that MSE should try and find a better way to tackle this issue. From what I've read here, it affects quite a lot of members, who feel they don't want to post wins or perhaps don't want to post at all.

You know, perhaps we should post a link to this thread in site feedback? I think I will do that...

What do people think about suggesting email verification for new members?

The forum already does that. Or should do.

As said though, it's ridiculously easy to set up new email addresses.
Maybe it should be a rule that new members are not allowed to send PM's? (assuming that it is new members behaving this way?)

    - A step to far I think, and would be letting them win as someone else said.
    - Also I've seen quite a few cases where new people, say on DFW etc, have joined and wanted to communicate in private with StepChange, MSE staff, and other users. Usually because they feel they can't post openly about some sensitive issues.
    - Same goes for existing users, who as a result of sensitive issues, may feel the need to register an AE rather than do it under their usual user-name.

Or maybe if MSE would just tie membership to IP addresses as some other forums do.
No more trolls & no more AEs,or at least a big reduction as they would have to have another connection to use.

vBulletin already tracks the posting IP.

Some IP's are fairly static and trolls can be traced that way eg Sky IPs; but some IP's change all the time eg BT and then if someone is using a dongle there's little or no way of nailing down who the troll is. Also, if they know what they are doing then sadly they can mask their IP totally.

Like email addresses, it is ridiculously easy to use a proxy/VPN etc to mask your true IP and evade any tracking like that.

For anyone determined to troll, it is trivial to get around any block.
