Does this one smell of self promotion to you or is it just me needing a bath?

reeks of it (both versions of the same competition post)0 -
Yeah fancy coming to a competition site to promote your own competition! I say that hanging is too good for 'em. (In case there is any doubt, I am being sarcastic.)
At worse they break the rules deliberately. At best they do so innocently, along with peeps who add a link for these "scum". So they want to promote their competitions? That doesn't make them evil. Most/all comps are run for promotion.
I'm not saying we should ignore rule breaking, but there is also a rule about us being nice to each other. We are told to report rule breaks for MSE to handle. Personally I think declaring war is a bit of an overkill. It is damaging to the whole forum to be angry and abusive about stuff like this. It encourages a mob mentality where someone making a mistake gets treated like they're doing a Jimmy Saville. In my opinion this treatment is far worse than the rule break being moaned about.
I suggest a simple "reported for suspected self-promotion" may help in preventing people adding a link. Then just leave it to MSE to deal with.

Finally some common sense and decency. This whole thread should be removed and is yet another example of the few thinking they are better than the many. Not all new posters are self promoters and if some are does that make them scum?? Yet again I repeat why are people who copy/paste and take competitions from sites without permission heroes and yet when the companies want to post them themselves, they get called scum. Plenty of regs post dupe posts so just blaming new posters like a bunch of hyenas is wrong and inflammatory.August-September 2017: Lots of stuff

It's not really duplicate posts that are an issue if the forum rules have been followed, it's self-promoting posts where they do not post in the correct format and ignore requests to correct it (often because it's just register, post and run, sometimes with further visits just to incorrectly post again).
Going back to duplicates it is very rare for regs to post them unless they are posted fairly close together so do not show on a forum search but as a % of posts it is a tiny fraction of 1% they might dupe compared to 100% for a single poster duping.serenity2012 wrote: »yet another example of the few thinking they are better than the many
Presumably by that you mean the few who are self-promoters think they are better than the vast majority (99%+) who post correctly and that they do not have to bother following the posting guidelines.0 -
The thing I'm STRONGLY against is taking it upon yourselves to decide the post is a wrong'un and expiring it. When admin decided to reduce the number of 'hits' Andrea would not specify the amount for fear of 'it being abused', which is exactly what you're doing.
If they take that opinion, they'll probably remove the expiry button altogether, which then puts more work on the BG's (covering that in another thread), by causing every dead comp to stay on the board, which will cue the next gripes (not the right word but it'll do), especially around say...December time.
I think you should leave the admin to the admin bods. If you think a post is self-promo, go through the proper channels and report it. If you're frustrated because they aren't doing what you think is an adequate job, take it up with them.Golly, I've got the newt pregnant...

Horses for courses I suppose, face to face we use "scum" "you scum suckin pig" etc no one thinks anything of it and it's about the mildest thing you can say as it is so obviously not meant seriously, while calling someone a fool would be asking for trouble.
I think the word scum is much worse than fool. Its not that mild.
On another note I reported a comp once as I thought it was obviously self promotion. The user name on here was very similar to the website running the comp. Also they were a new poster. I got a reply back from Admin that made me feel naughty for reporting so I wont be doing that again. I felt like I was the one who breaking the rules.
Other forums I use the admins are much nicer, even if they think my query was wrong they wouldn't make me feel bad about reporting something like MSE did.Current Aims: Laptop/PC, decent money, holiday

If you called someone 'scum' round my way you'd get yer head kicked in.
Anyway, back to the point ...
The most annoying thing is bothering to offer advice when you know there's little chance of the poster coming back to read it. I think for most of these types of comps it's easier and less time consuming if people just hit the spam button and it gets re-posted a little later on.
As an aside and as a sweeping generalisation, it's infuriating when people complain about something yet do absolutely nothing to help ...0 -

As I said it means next to nothing round here, tossed about like "morning", "you having another" etc. but I have amended the post to "naughty people" and added a footnote. The thing I'm STRONGLY against is taking it upon yourselves to decide the post is a wrong'un and expiring it.
If a post is incorrectly titled then it goes to game over when a BG gets round to it just the same as any date expired post does so I cannot see it is a problem to expire them.
If a post is correct but appears to be or clearly is self-promotion then it should be reported, if it is repeat post it should still be reported but can also be "spammed".0 -
