Yeah fancy coming to a competition site to promote your own competition! I say that hanging is too good for 'em. (In case there is any doubt, I am being sarcastic.)
At worse they break the rules deliberately. At best they do so innocently, along with peeps who add a link. So they want to promote their competitions? That doesn't make them evil. Most/all comps are run for promotion.
I'm not saying we should ignore rule breaking, but there is also a rule about us being nice to each other. We are told to report rule breaks for MSE to handle. Personally I think declaring war is a bit of an overkill. It is damaging to the whole forum to be angry and abusive about stuff like this. It encourages a mob mentality where someone making a mistake gets treated like they're doing a Jimmy Saville. In my opinion this treatment is far worse than the rule break being moaned about.
I suggest a simple "reported for suspected self-promotion" may help in preventing people adding a link. Then just leave it to MSE to deal with.

It can take ages for the posts to be removed and that does not prevent links being added (and mse can throw a wobbly if you add a post like that).
There are plenty of forums that allow self-promotion but none of them have the reach of MSE which is why they try to post on here.
As far as I am concerned all spammers are scum whatever they are pushing....Scum=a layer of unpleasant or unwanted material... not sure how evil and Jimmy Saville come into it.0 -

I joined MSE comps at the end of April and was awestruck by the number of competitions on offer and by the people who posted them. After a few weeks I felt that I needed to "give back" a bit, and tried to help out with finding answers for a couple of competitions. I did read the guidelines before my first post and was very very nervous that I would get it wrong.
Finding new comps is a mammoth task but I was able to find one on Facebook and posted it, and was then very greatful in the way that weeowens suggested i add (FB) to the end of the title. Since then I have found a few more competitions.
I needed to be shown how to link to pictures of the prizes, and once in my excitement at finding a new comp I rushed the posting and forgot the closing date, and was again very nicely reminded. I still feel of myself as a newbie and am very happy to be gently reminded if i do get it wrong, but that has rarely happened due to my reading the guidelines and watching how others post.
At some time I want to ask the regulars how they can just post a name (such as STYLE) and it take you direct to the comp. I would love to find new comps more often, but will continue to post them when i do and happily take any suggestions by the stalwarts on here.A huge THANKYOU to all who contribute to this Forum. :beer:0 -

9 How do I do a 'clicky' instead of putting the full URL?
On the image below, follow the numbered steps.- Type the text that you want to be your neat link / clicky, For Example, ‘Hamper Clicky’ on the post & then highlight it. (I also make the word/s bold too at this point so they show up better in the post as a link).
- Click the icon of a world with a paper clip under it & a box will appear.

Popping off on a tangent, go easy on name-calling, whether it be spammers or us good folk. We all know what happened last time that storm blew up

Horses for courses I suppose, face to face we use "scum" "you scum suckin pig" etc no one thinks anything of it and it's about the mildest thing you can say as it is so obviously not meant seriously, while calling someone a fool would be asking for trouble.0 -
I needed to be shown how to link to pictures of the prizes
I wouldn't worry too much about linking to pics of the prizes as we are not allowed to hotlink directly to the pictures of the company's website.
Some people take a copy of the picture to put on a hosting site and then put it on here with the comp but this could lead to copyright issues as usually most websites say that you cannot reproduce parts of their website0
