Hi,I suppose it's a strange place this internet.
I sometimes get the feeling that asking for dates etc to be added is not welcome especially when I see threads such as this one.Is asking for such policing?
Maybe some members just take the path of least resistance & just add the link.
I had a prime example earlier where an OP's email link had broken (MSE had done it's adding things on to it trick) so I added a new one. OP then came back to say that there was already a clicky link and that its better to go via the website anyway. At first I thought it was a bit... 'huffy' but after reading it again it could be the posters style of writing. Anyway, cut a long story short, there followed a couple of tippy toe no offence posts, which has actually reminded me I never PM'd her explaining why I posted in the first place (I'll do that after this) but I digress...
It could be that users are entering as comps appear and just think they're being helpful by adding the link without actually scanning the post for dates etc or that they assume the OP has posted correctly. On the other hand it might not be that at all.
I think regarding the linky weeowens has provided has a lot to do with the way that users say things. There's been posts where users have commented along the lines of "you must do it like this" or "don't do that"which come across as a bit harsh or antagonistic. It could be the OP doesn't know because they haven't read the guide or stickies and just thinks they're giving a bit back. There's also been comments like "Thanks for posting, next time could you do it like such and such" or those little neon signs which I think are much less direct, for lack of a better word.
I don't have any quibbles about sending things to BG's after all, if we didn't the boards would be in a complete state! Bear in mind the amount of issues compared to the total of threads, it's safe to say they do an excellent job and a lot of it is down to us because if they don't get told how are they meant to do anything?
It all comes down to everyone's interpretation at the end of the day. Most of the time it's all good so everyone just keep doing what they're doing.
Now, let's go write that PM as I've gone so far off on a tangent I can't remember what the OP was!Golly, I've got the newt pregnant...

Nope, but some members will politely PM them to let them know or post on one of their duplicate threads politely pointing out they have posted a few dupes and then link to the Comping Guide on the forum and/or tell them how to search for the comp they want to posted beforehand.2019 Wins

TBH I just think the newbie (Ahem spam) posts are starting to wear a little thin.
There as so many, trying to explain re end dates every time, especially when there are only a few who do, is futile unless the system for newbies is changed. Plus there's the added "forum police" issue.
I've mentioned before that I think newbies should not be able to post comps until the have read the guide on the first page and "ticked a box" to state that they have read and understood how to post.
I'm sorry if anyone is offended or thinks I'm alienating newbies, it's not my intention
Edit: Just to add that in most cases explaining re end dates is a waste of time anyway as the op doesn't seem to log on againA strong man stands up for himself, a stronger man stands up for others.0 -

Given the number of self-promotion/duplicate/incorrect format postings that other people just add links to it might be an idea to raise the post count to say 1,000 or more before you become link eligible (slightly tongue in cheek but it is a bit annoying)0 -
Oooo I'm nearly link eligible!!!Golly, I've got the newt pregnant...

I am really grateful for all the people who help out with sorting out the merges if not we would have been seriously duping ourselves.
I don't think I'm a newbie any more so was brave and tried to help out with requesting merges and honestly I couldn't keep up! Thanks to everyone who does this on a regular basis, your work is truly appreciated :T0 -
I might just be cynical but it amazes me how many comps are 'stumbled upon' by first time posters and when you look at their profile ages later it shows them as still watching their thread but making no effort to correct the format of the thread title. Why bother when someone has jumped in with the link and people are entering the comp? I'm sure the majority of them are self promotion.Luck is believing you’re lucky – Tennessee Williams
