Okay...17070 call made and noisy line fault reported. Boy, they really don't want to come out do they! Anyway an engineer is heading our way sometime soon to check everything outside.

This noisy line is the really IMPORTANT bit. You CANNOT get any decent data rates on a noisy line (each chunk of noise screws up part of the data transmission, which then has to be resent). There is absolutely no point in doing any other testing until the noisy line problem is resolved.

Now when the line people come, just talk about noisy lines. You may get someone who only has experience of fixing the audio faults. DO NOT under any circumstance mention broadband or data as if you do they will probably say words to the effect "not my area gov" and tell you that you need to report the fault to someone else; and then close down the fault report and go away.

So get the noisy line fixed and then see what the state is; you may well be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks Terry2. I can manage that.

It's getting hubby to keep his gob shut about broadband for a few minutes that will be the problem!

Would have helped if you'd mentioned the noise on the line from the outset, how long has it been like that?
I can't see the logic in keeping your line rental with BT and your broadband with TT, you'd pay far less on a full LLU service. But get the line fault sorted first.

  • Talk Talk are terrible. I had to get the ombudsman to fight my case with them. They mis-sold me their goods. They stated that I WOULD NOT have a late payment processing fee. This was a lie. I got £400 back when I fought it. Avoid at all costs.

TT aren't all bad, been flawless for several years, and the full LLU service is very good :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

A further thing to test - is the line still audibly noisy with the router disconnected.

I went through 5 callouts for a noisy line which was affecting ADSL - not nearly to the point that yours is though and on the fifth one the BT bod realised that the noise was only present with the router connected. He washed his hands of it and told me to report the problem through my ISP. I gave up and swapped to cable instead but I'm guessing you don't have that option.

The reason many do this is so that they can retain the option to switch ISP without having to go though a re-provide of the phone line. ISPs that don't offer full LLU need a BT line.

Because of their past poor reputation I don't think I'd use them at all but no provider is perfect. In my own experience both VM and BT can be dire at times.

Hardly relevant to this thread though, because TT are entirely blameless here. The issue is down to the line rental provider.

I think even TT LLU lines get maintained by Openreach. I don't recall ever seeing a TalkTalk van parked up by a phone cabinet.

I hope the OP can get more satisfaction from Openreach than I ever did. 5 visits no fix followed by a no-show when I tried to give FTTC a go gives me no confidence in them at all. A monopoly provider who is not answerable to the public.

Seriously? How would I know that noise on my line might affect my BB? I think I've made it quite clear all along that I am not technical and don't understand it all - that is, after all, why I asked for help.
