Painfully slow broadband....

1. check your exchange info here:-
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker
to see what your exchange is capable of (ADSL, ADSL2+, 20CN, 21CN, etc) This will give us a better idea of what you should be getting, based on your line stats.
2. http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php is the most accurate bb speed estimator out there...put in your downstream attenuation for best estimate.
3. It probably isn't TT's fault as you're on an IPStream connection (i.e. BT line and exchange equipment)
4. Find your Master socket (as Penrhyn says, there will be only one unless you have multiple phone lines coming into the house), plug the router into the test socket and REMOVE ALL OTHER DEVICES plugged into all extension sockets and re-check line stats and speedtest again.

Morning GunJack.
Step 1:
Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.
Click here to compare packages available to you. However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.
The following services are available in your location:- BT Wholesale ADSL
- BT Wholesale ADSL Max
- TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Step 2:
Estimation of your maximum rate adaptive adsl speed Downstream
Attenuation 16 dBApprox
Line Length 1.2 km
dslMAX (20CN) 8128kbps
IP Profile 7150kbps
BT 21CN WBC
& adsl2+ 21696kbps
IP Profile 19136kbps
adsl2+ (LLU) kbps
Throughput kbps
Hope that makes sense!
Step 3: still don't like TT. Once I'm through all this we'll probably change anyway. Paying far too much!If you have nothing constructive to say just move along.0 -
No, it's telling you that TT have their own kit in the exchange also ( that's LLU). Gave you the wrong link, use this one, then click your exchange when it gives it to you, what you posted would imply that BT haven't enabled 21CN (ADSL2+) on your exchange:-

Oh I see.
Broadband availability overview
ADSL:Yes
SDSL:No
LLU services: Yes
Cable:No
Wireless:No
BT Wholesale information
ADSL status: Enabled as of 04/02/2004
ADSL Max status: Enabled as of 31/03/2006
SDSL status: Not available
21CN WBC status: Not available
FTTC status: Not available
Everything else has red x and the only provider with LLU presence is TalkTalk. If you have nothing constructive to say just move along.0 -
so, on a bt-based line the best yo will get is 8128 kb/s, i.e. 8 Meg as there's no 21CN (bt's description of ADSL2+).
So, you probably have a line fault somewhere or the bt systems are borking the speed, more than likely not TT's fault at all. Finish your investigation inside the house as suggested then if no better get on to TT to report a fault, as they will then have to deal with bt on your behalf.
Your biggest improvement would be to take your line to TT for the LLU service, and probably get around 18-20 Meg

I concur, when you have eliminated your home wiring you'll need to sort out your contract issue with Talk Talk and get them to investigate furthur.
As an example of line stats these are mine.
Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9214 kbps 945 kbps
Line Attenuation 43.5 dB 25.4 dB
Noise Margin 6.3 dB 11.11 dB
Connection speed is inversely proportional to line attenuation, i.e lower the figure the faster the speed.
Noise margin if optimum is usually around 7 db.That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
The reason your sync is so low is the ridiculously high downstream noise margin.Type Interleave Path
Status SHOWTIME
Downstream Upstream
Data rate(Kbps) 263 1017
Noise Margin 32 8
Output power(dBm) 12 8
Attenuation(dB) 16 6
If simply rebooting the router doesn't bring that to a more sensible number (typically 6dB) then either your profile has been incorrectly set or the router is faulty. The upstream sync suggests you are already on TT LLU.
It sounds like you must have already rebooted the router unless you swapped the connection without powering it down. I'd suggest you reboot it again then recheck the stats - if the first noise margin figure isn't somewhere between 6 and 12 at most then call talk talk and don't let them fob you off.0 -
^^ It looks like it may be a router reporting error, where up/downstream figures are transposed (or just labelled wrong way round)......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

It's possible as some routers do do that but usually some other figures get transposed too and the rest look to be correct to me.
With that downstream attenuation it would take a huge amount of local noise or maybe faulty/missing filter to bring the sync down to what it is reporting. Trying the test socket as has already been advised should sort that out.0 -
OP, do you have noise/crackling on the line? If your line rental is with BT, dial 17070, select option 2, quiet line test. If so, report it as a line fault to your line rental provider (not as a broadband fault).
The extension 'boxes' are your own responsibility except for the one master socket. If you call BT out to check them, you will be charged a minimum £130 call out.No free lunch, and no free laptop
