that's a pretty harsh thing to happen :(

the memtest i use is this one: http://www.memtest.org/download/1.55.1/memtest86+-1.55.1.floppy.zip

you just need to install it to floppy, reboot, and away you go.

what was the error you got before it reformatted? when did it appear? and what do you mean by "when you went into recovery"?

Ok its just crashed again but this time the blue screnn stayed a little longer hes what i managed to get from it this time,

    Stop : 0x0000008e

    Try changing video adaptors

    Kmixer.sys

    Add f28cb5fo based at f28cb5fo

Kmixer is the sound. Looks like this is your problem. Is the soundcard built into the motherboard? Or is it an PCI card?

What make/model is it? What drivers have you used?

Just been looking round the net and people with the same problem are saying chipset drivers, soundcard drivers and RAM/PSU solved there problems.

I'd start with soundcard drivers, then chipset drivers. Are all the blue screens you get related to Kmixer.sys?

Sorry for the late replie to this but my pc died big time and today the engineer came out and blamed the hard drive as on friday it stopped working altogether and wasnt recognised and would only make a clicking sound, so he put the new one in and walked away, now i cant get the recovery to fully load:mad: and spoke to engineer on phone who ran through several testschecking my recovery cd was ok which he said it was but last option was to do a full format from comand promt and try from there as it was a new drive and mabe the system recovery option for formatting wasnt good for first format which did make sence which i done but its still not recovering and its missing windows\installer\49fe6.msp and refuses to boot into windows - along with other missing files and that they would send me out more recovery discs 5-10 working days, no im really miffed at this and asked about refund and what if new recovery discs didnt work which he couldnt reply to just said they would and no refund or replacement which really annoyed me (polite version) my guarentee is with the maker of the pc rather than pc world, so now i have to wait till the discs come in to see if this fixes the problem and if it doesnt well who knows? :wall:

I dont know enough about these pcs with inbuilt/disc recovery, im used to a window disc which does it all, but it does go into recovery and it recovers most files except the one i mentioned and a few software files but i cant even get into windows im using very old p2 pc just now as last resort to try and find out what i can and cannot do, and this guy is blaming the faulty hardrive for making a faulty restore disc hence i need new restore disc and hence i need to wait upto 10 working days for these to arrive i dont know what else i can do. I am so p*ssed off with this as the pc is only 2 months old and effectivley what the guy on the pc helpline said i only have a 28 warrenty with them and a 12 month guarentee with patriot, and if this is the case then i hope people are aware of this before buying from there as i wasnt made aware of this when i went to buy it.

    erk its still under guarantee?
My sons hard drive died after 3 months. We had an arguement with the shop where we bought it who argued it was down to western digital to fix it and us to send it to them(in Malaya). After complaining to their head office, we were told sorry it was the shop assistants mistake and ofcourse they would get us a replacement. I wonder if you are just being fobbed off? Surely if you buy from PCWorld, the contract is with them ,not the pc manufacturer.

A warranty cannot affect your other rights. The warranty is a separate issue. Even if the manufacturer did not offer a warranty, it is reasonable to expect a PC to last more than two months. Therefore PC World are obligated to do something about it and cannot palm it off on the manufacturer (if you bought direct you would get it cheaper - so you have paid for PC Worlds services here!)

Bottom line! PC World must deal with this

I agree. You bought it from them so they are obliged to to deal with any queries. Take it back the shop and don't let them try and tell you it has nothing to do with them.
    Q. It isn't our fault the goods are defective - go back to the manufacturer.

    A. Not true - you bought the goods from the trader, not the manufacturer, and the trader is liable for any breaches of contract (unless he was acting as the manufacturer's agent).

The above was taken from the Trading Standards website.

Always ring Trading Standards and ask them for advice and then when you go back to the PC World state you have spoken with such a person at Trading Standards.

I had this problem of random reboots when I built my PC, I checked the memory with memtest86 and this reported everything was fine.

In the end it turned out to be a faulty IDE cable.

We took it back to pc world last night and they were adamant 28 day guarentee then the maker takes up the warrenty also anything sold in pc world had the same guarentee too so not just pcs, i told him i would have less hassle returning a broken toaster to the likes of asda etc and he agreed it wasnt too good but there wasnt a lot he could do, because pc service call had attempted to fix the machine it was basically upto them to finalise it. At this point a small queue for c.s. was forming and i wasnt happy with what i was hearing so still being polite i told him it was crazy - you pay £500 for a pc (base only) and you only get 28 days to which he had to confirm, i asked him why it wasnt relayed to me when i purchased machine as i was told 12 month guarentee - he couldnt answer he was at this point trying to get me to go back to pc service call saying he wasnt authorised to work on the machine to which i asked how di i get u authorised do i call them - yes as they wouldnt speak to him, so he was arranging the phone and i told him about the engineer that called apparentley he was in the wrong big style he should have stayed and made sure machine was back to factory settings also the engineer had left his report regarding what was wrong and he signed it off hdd replaced and restore ran fine which obviously it didnt, so that changed the guys mind in pc world he offered to take the machine in and try a few differant recovery discs that he had and worst case it would take the 2 weeks for the right ones to come through but at least he is trying something and hoping to get my pc back to me on wednesday - no charge:beer: BUT he has told me to write to trading standards and pc service call regarding this matter as the engineer had not done what he was supposed to do, he hadnt even completed the log on there records correct he had put a universal code instead of his own so i was asked to discribe this engineer and they took note of that and the engineers report too - so time to calmy compose a few letters of complaint off and see if i can get some compensation for mainly the 1 hour call to the helpline which were no help at all.
