I just checked with the above and it is giving me type - error, source - system error, categorie - (102),event - 1003 and looking back it is the same error and discription for all the recent crashes that have occured, there is nothing immediatley close, the only other thing is a yellow i triangle with warning source -dhcp, categorie none, event 1003 but this is no where near where it crashes, and on looking further in going back to 11/04 there is another error which has appeared a few times but not since its source is showing dcom, categorie none and event - 10010 happened maybe 6 times in 2 months.

    Does that help anyone? Please.

sorry, forgot to mention, if you double-click on any entry in event viewer it should give you more detail, such as the 0x000000xx code and the parameters for any errors.

    Looks like a memory fault.
The fact that it runs for a while, COULD be that one of the modules needs a reseat.
Its not an uncommon fault, they can be fiddly to latch if you've never done one before.
    IF STILL CRASHING then.....
How many memory modules have you got?
If more than one, try removing one at a time (leave it out) and run for a day or two on
remaining module(s) to prove it to a module.

REMEMBER ESP PRECAUTIONS when the case is open.
IF your PC is still under warranty speak to the retailer first before doing any of the above.

A word of warning to others - some of the better memory testers will find problems on
working systems - you're PC is designed to cope and mark bad blocks, so do'nt rush out and buy new chips just yet (unless there fish on the menu!).
If its working don't fix it.

    Download prime95

    http://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v238.exe

Install it and run the 'torture test'

Does it crash? If so straight away?

If it does crash this points to a PSU, RAM or overheating CPU problem.

memtest86 is also very good for checking your memory - you can make a boot cd or floppy and leave it running overnight- if you have multiple chips you can test them individually and in pairs to isolate the fault You cant tell if it is the motherboard or the ram easily though - my fault was the MOBO, three sets of ram could not be faulty and a MOBO replacement sorted it!

After one fault you will never trust a ram chip again - I ALWAYS test now!

Ok its just crashed again but this time the blue screnn stayed a little longer hes what i managed to get from it this time,

    Stop : 0x0000008e

    Try changing video adaptors

    Kmixer.sys

    Add f28cb5fo based at f28cb5fo

Does that mean anything to anybody? and if it is the memory either one i think it would be best to go back to pc world as the unit it only a few months old and let them run all the tests or am i best doing so myself?

if you are worried about hardware/software guarantee issues, it would be advisable to run the RAM tests (see my first post for the download links) yourself overnight, and take a photo of the screen if any errors are found; then at least you will have some proof that something is wrong. it is very easy to set up the test; all you need is to download the program, run it and have a blank floppy disk to hand. then you just reboot with the disk in the drive, and go to bed... wake up in the morning, and see if there's any errors.

if you have a PC World guarantee, its probably best NOT to start taking out memory chips to further isolate the problem, as it could cause you more trouble in the long term.

if memtest or the windows memory diagnostic finds errors, you can reasonably assume that there is a hardware problem somewhere along the line.

did you download speedfan to keep an eye on your CPU temperature and voltages?

Yeah - use memtest86 and if there is a problem go and get an exchange at PC world. But do the tests yourself - I dont know how good the PCworld techs are

Another update, the pc crashed with boot disc failure insert system disc, so ok i went along with that and it made me reformat whole pc which means ive lost everything:mad: also when i went into recovery it came up as failure to extract some of the nero files ok so i have the disc as back up but surley that isnt right?

Now that i am back online the only stuff i have installed is nortons and my external usb hardrive so back to shop bought basics nearly, i will see how it runs with just this on incase it was one of my other usb devices and tonight i will run the memory tests and see what happens from there.

Also which version of memtest am i looking to download?just went and had a look and i cant determine which one is for booting via floppy as with some nero files not being extracted i dont think nero will burn properley?

But big thank you for following this thread:beer: and hopefully you will continue to do so ;)
