Do you tell people about your comping hobby?

My husband used to laugh about me entering comps & take the mickey until I started to have some wins. Now he dashes for the post & loves it when the carrier knocks. He was over the moon when we arrived home one day & the neighbour had taken in a huge flat screen television we were not expecting. Now he encourages me to enter!! So if you enjoy entering, just do it and celebrate when you get a win, but you will sometimes get the occasional envious person. Good luck0

Oh wow so many replies to my OP! I've experienced similar to most of you... people asking me 'what have you won lately', and 'friends' on Facebook asking for tips on winning. I don't mind when it's my real friends and then I will give them lots of good tips but when they are literally people from school I've never spoken to I don't have the energy to give them advice!
The friends of mine that have started comping a bit have won things, and even if theyre small they have been thrilled!! I've recently started a new job 2 weeks ago and one of my colleagues has won £10 superdrug points and a Marc Jacobs tote from her Diet Coke bottle just because I gave her the inspiration and realisation that people DO win!!
I think many people assume comps are scams!! Well theyre missing out
My friends and family are really supportive and excited for me (I think!) although there can be a bit of jealousy at times I feel, so I tend not to bring it up often now unless asked!♥ Blogger at Victoria's Vintage Blog ♥0 -
Very interesting thread - it's nice to hear how people feel about their hobby.
I tell close friends - they tend to ask if I've won anything lately but I don't tell them everything - just the more interesting wins. My hubby hears about everything and gets a great deal of benefit from it! My mum is a comper and when I was little she was always winning things so I always knew it was possible. I started comping seriously about 10 years ago when I was at uni as I was too poor to afford nice things, it would provide me with the occasional treat and that is how I continue to see comping - as a means of providing treats I couldn't otherwise afford and improving the quality of my life!
At work people knew I was a comper - there were 2 of us in the team so people would hear our stories and were often amazed! It can be a great ice breaker but I have encountered jealous people. I just don't talk to them about my hobby!
HUGE THANKS! To all those who post comps and answers0 -
My close family know. I do share what I win with them. Well, I didn't have to buy much in the way of Christmas pressies last year :rotfl:Other family members aren't interested, (mainly because I don't give anything to them), and I have had a few jealous comments from them when they asked about any wins, so I don't bother telling them anything.
DH was pestering me to have a decent hobby for ages, and I really couldn't have a better one. It's great, some of my friends on F/B are now starting to join in.
My DH mentioned my hobby to his work colleagues one night during a quiet spell, apparently one of them told him "your missus is wasting her time". To which DH replied "Oh, so the holiday to the USA we are going on was a waste of her efforts then?" Which shut the fella up.
So now, when he goes to work, they all ask if I've won anything :rotfl:They have had a few of wins from me, in the way of me winning too many sweeties and cereals for myself and DH to eat. I have a few fans there atm :rotfl::T
Be lucky :beer:BEST EVER WINS WON IN ORDER (so far) = Sony Camcorder, 32" lcd telly, micro ipod hifi, Ipod Nano, Playstation 3, Andrex Jackpup, Holiday to USA, nintendo wii, Liverpool vs Everton tickets, £250 Reward Your thirst, £500 Pepsi, p&o rotterdam trip, perfume hamper, Dr Who stamp set, steam cleaner.
comping = nowt more thrillin' than winnin':T :j0 -
Loads of people know I enter competitions in my spare time. A few people have considered taken up after talking to me but very few persevere.
I tend not to tell people when I've won stuff though - it can look a bit like showing off so I usually just keep it to myself when I win.0 -
My mum knows, because she gets some of the stuff I win. She is a bit scathing about it though. She had a friend who was a serious comper who used to win cars and holidays, so she knows it's possible to win big, but she can be very sarcastic about it to me.
My husband knows and is very supportive, he likes getting free stuff.
People at work have openly laughed at me about it, so I make sure they know when I've won something

Not really, ive tried in the past and they basically laugh and say what a waste of time, a couple have tried it for a week and said, "see you dont win" they dont realise what has to go into comping to get anything out of it

I do feel embarrassed when I say 'oh I won that in a competition'. Not sure why, but if I can avoid telling people I do. There is definitley a bit of a saddo stigma attached to comping, even if you do win. But I still carry on lol0

I used to try and keep it secret, but my blabber mouth husband and family etc told everyone about it! I used to be quite embarressed, however I have got a bit more used to it! I told a few work friends recently about my hobby which I had kept secret for the few years I've worked there, and they looked at me like I was a bit of a loser! lol Even when I told them some of my amazing wins they clearly thought I was sad! I've decided now to try and keep it quiet again, so family only and won't tell work people when I win!0
