Do you tell people about your comping hobby?

I used to excitedly tell anyone who'd listen about comping as I wanted them to have some of what I was having. Some people said they were going to start comping, but when I asked how they were getting on they were no longer comping as they couldn't be bothered - their loss. Other people I know think that I'm lying or mad  So I don't bother telling people any more, unless it's a biggie like a holiday. Even then I think that people are quite jealous, this saddens me as I've shared with them by giving them the opportunity to comp.0

I have been comping for about six years now and have won some amazing prizes including five holidays and a lot of the latest gadgets as well as money. I have told family and friends (my kids love the gadgets I win) but don't tell some friends everything I win now, I find some may be a little jealous saying I always win, which I don't I just put in the effort to enter these comps as well as having a full time job. I love my hobby, it has enabled me to go to see the world and give my family things that I wouldn't normally be able to afford.0

I tell most people who think it's OK, but worthless. Then I tell 'em some of my wins and their attention picks up!
They usually ask me "is it that easy". I tell 'em it's not and needs daily effort. Most then switch off :rotfl:0 -
Most people know and usually ask, "What have you won lately?!" followed by can you give me the link of the "Competitions website" meaning this! I've been lucky enough to have won a fair few things over the last 15 years or so - just wish I'd joined MSE a lot earlier!
Thanks to all who post and keep up the good work!0 -
I tell my extended family about my wins and as they all benefit from it they dont seem to mind, its more that they are annoyed they dont win as much as me :rotfl:
I have told people outside of the family as well as it is an interesting talking point on hobbies. I havent had anyone tell me im sad and I dont give a fig if anyone thinks I am . . I didnt have to pay for my sons Xbox 360 christmas before last or any presents at all this christmas
On the whole I found most people want to know where I find my comps (so I happily direct them right here) ive had a couple of green eyed monsters who tend to change the subject when I say ive won something so I just dont tell them anymore, which also means they dont benefit if I win something I cant use part of.
Now I really must get back to my comping! im no-where near finished wth my christmas *shopping* :rotfl: :rotfl:SPC No 002 SPC(3) £285/£250 (4) £519.84/£500 (5) £768.32/£500 (6) £911.30/£600 (7) £913.23/£600 (8) £1184.82/£750 (9) £2864.04/£750 (10) £3846.25/£1000 (11) £1779.72/£1000 (12) £1596.55/£1000 (13) £1534.70/£1000 (14) £775.60/£1000 (15) £700.20/£1000 (16) £2081.34/£1000 (17) £1691.15/£1000 (18) £225/£10000 -
It wouldn't even occur to me to be ashamed of this hobby! I love it for the most part, like others I go through phases of being a little lax if things are hectic at home, but an unexpected WEM soon perks me back up!
I tell people I usually speak to, but for the most part I'm pretty anti-social so I don't shout it from the rooftops lol.
I've only been comping since late last year and I've already won enough to know I won't stop, I even made a Facebook status on New Years Day to let my friends know if they were sick of my posts now, they should delete me as I'm not going to stop. Most of my friends are now 'stalkers' following me around entering the comps I enter LOL0 -
my family all know and encourage it and my best friends who I have taken to gigs etc. They think its a little unusual but great. I only sit and do them when rubbish TV is on (most evenings) so its better than staring glassy eyed at the TV.0

My family know. And close friends as they often benefit from my wins. For the smaller stuff, I don't shout about it. Often these things will end up as gifts so I like to keep hush hush on my FB. Also makes me look waaay more generous/wealthy than I am!
I've got more time for it this year because I'm currently out of work but I think when I do get a job I'll definitely make as much time as I can for comping. I love the feeling of getting something for nothing, whether its a freebie, discount, general thriftiness or a comp!Debt free 6th December 2014

2011 Wins £3512 2012 Wins £1531
2013 Wins £2946 2014 Wins £1374

I think everyone knows I enter comps, but its only really DH who knows the extent to which I do. I tend to play down my wins a bit too as I feel like I wont be believed if I tell people what Ive won. I also dont tell people how many comps I enter. A friend asked me where I found the time once and I just said I usually do it for a couple of hours when the older two are at school and my youngest is having a nap. In reality I do it a lot more.
Its not on my CV and I wouldn't mention it to those Ive just met unless they ask where I got something (like my LK Bennet handbag), but even then I will only tell them about that one prize.
I am a little shy about my hobby, but Ive won some good things. I like the attitude some have on here saying that they love comping and if others are jealous or think they are sad for doing it then thats their loss. I might try to adopt that attitude myself.Current Aims: Laptop/PC, decent money, holiday
Best Wins: Ipad, Nintendo 3DS, £400 Shopping Spree at LK Bennett, £100 Boots vouchers
Total Wins (Since April 2012) £3442.56
Big thanks to all who post comps :T:beer:0
