Are the Jobcentre on Strike 20/3/2013

I was browsing the news http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21689428 and just wondering anybody knew if Jobcentres would be closed on this date.

According to the BBC they want another £1200 p.a or 5% payrise - Good luck with that (Insert sarcasm smiley here)

I am supposed to be seeing my advisor rather than just signing on. I will of course try to ask them on Monday while in town but tbh it amazes me that most of the staff in there manage to dress themselves in the morning (there are some good ones though, but not point of contact staff)
Bedroom Tax / Spare room subsidy / Housing Benefit Reduction - It's the same thing, get over it.

The good ones are probably better at avoiding contact with people who think they are superior. :p

You have to understand what civil servants have had to contend with over the past 5 years!

Loss of their pension rights which was supposed to be written in blood, no payrises, less staff which meant more work load for those that were left.

I have a friend in a government department whose job was to carry out a review of 12 new cases a week and clear 12 old cases a week (2006). Now that same person has to deal with 25 new cases and clear 25 old cases a week (2013) for no more money!

Twice the work in half the time for the same amount of money - no wonder they are kicking off. I would be if my boss told me to do that.

I'm sure there will be plenty of people coming on here with comments, sarcastic and otherwise, about a request for a 5% pay rise but at least the request is transparent and open for all to see as opposed to this http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2013/jan/10/mps-call-pay-rise-survey

Sanction the Lot of em! :Tthey seem to be very quick to do so if claimants don't fulfil their obligations. It's an insult to those who have to sign on every week and long for a job.

Yes there is trade union action in the form of a strike day planned for 20th March. it is very unlikely that your Jobcentre will be closed, they may cancel appts and excuse signing if they think they will be short staffed. Nobody can tell you what will happen in advance as there is no requirement to tell DWP whether you are planning to strike or not.

Sadly John at this time we are living in the imaginary world of TORYLAND where we are "All in this together" in Toryland the poor pay for the failings of the rich bankers and will need all the luck they can get.:(

I dont work in the job centre but i'll be on strike on the 20th. It isn't the whole of the job centre it is the staff who have paid out of their wages to be part of the union, the union is fighting that civil service wages haven't risen with the rate of inflation and other pension issues. (benefits rise with inflation)

Please remember that civil servants (non job centre) work in the civil service for a lower wage than the equivalent job in theprivate sector, the reason they do this is because of the other benefits such as pension, secure job, ect.

So the answer is yes, there will still be people there, maybe alot less than usual so services restricted?

You do realise they won't be paid for any period of strike? Essentially a 'sanction'?
