That is a significant increase to your mortgage SA. Are you a way off from retirement?

Can you use savings to reduce the amount you are borrowing or stagger the work so some can be paid this year and some next to give you a chance to save for it?

I'm currently paying £220 a month for a £25k mortgage over 10 years so expecting it to increase by another £100 ish a month which would be do-able. I've got 10 years left until I plan to retire. I just want the work over and done with as soon as possible. If repayment amount for £15k is too high I'll look at reducing it to £10k. We don't have a lot of expenses, we don't have a car or any other travel costs (which the bank were astonished at!), we have no loans or credit card debts (which they also were astonished at!). The annoying thing is I have an old pension from a previous employment where the scheme is being closed down and there will be an option to take the full pot in cash - which would nicely cover the extra I need without having to remortgage. However, this will all take time and it won't be here in the next few weeks.

One thing I wish I'd done 4 years ago is contact one of those DIY SOS type programmes when Mr SA was in hospital, I bet I would've stood a good chance of getting the work done for free, especially when he was ready to come home after 9 months.

  • Totally off topic SA - but have you heard from Buffy. She hasn't, as far as I'm aware, been on here since the beginning of the year. Is she OK?

Hi SG - I haven't but Beanie said she was posting on FB. It's so strange without her, she must have her reasons for staying away from here.

Payday today :) Need to sort out finances properly at the weekend when I've got more time.

You can tell I'm back at work, the weather has been glorious here today!

Will be doing my first stint at volunteering on Friday with the charity work supports, helping reformed drug/alcohol abusers with job applications and IT skills - it will be like the blind leading the blind, hope they're not expecting anyone too techie!

What a fab thing to be doing, support with job applications and general encouragement, is so important for them, I know what positive feedback I got when I did it.

    Good luck
As a dear MSE friend says “keep plodding” or

    Hello SA,

I had a bit of a MSE break so I've just caught up - I hope the kitchen building work goes really well! London sounds like it was stressful, but I bet it was nice to get away anyway - I felt like that about my work-related Coventry trips!!

Glad to see you back JWP :) Beanie - glad Buffy is ok :)

I posted earlier but it disappeared, can't remember what I wrote :(

Walked to and from work today, first time since I broke my ankle. Not exactly 100% comfortable but I did it :) Will cancel bus pass now so will be £50 a month better off.

Finished work early today and got a couple of hours sitting in the sun :)

    Passports arrived :)

Will post last month's achievements and June targets at the weekend. However, today has been NSD 1 of June so off to a good start already :) Have got a tick chart now as keep losing count. Really need to update signature as well as it's way out of date.

Hello June and summer, my favourite season is finally here :)
