I was in a restaurant last night & no-one could pay by card regardless of which bank they used because the card machine was a Natwest one.

I suspect part of the problem this morning with online banking will have been every NatWest customer attempting to sign on to check their accounts - or just to see if it was working. No system will stand up to that sort of overload.

Now if instead it were only possible for banks to issue us with pieces of paper to sign and a piece of plastic to guarantee the payments these sort of problems could often be avoided. :)

Many Lloyds TSB and Halifax customers were unable to get cash, use debit cards or log into their accounts last New Year's Eve.

I'd just like to say I bank with Lloydstsb and I can't remember experiencing any problems on New Years Eve.

I've just checked my online account and see I the following successful transactions on New Years Eve:
    • Faster payment received
    • Cheque deposited (paid in by me at a local branch using their new automatic deposit machine)
    • Cashpoint withdrawal (using debit card)

I didn't have any problems with NatWest yesterday but that was because I was online before the troubles occurred.

Mishaps occur with all banks but NatWest seems to be having them more frequently than most and taking longer to recover from them.

NatWest online banking working for me.

A message was displayed apologising and saying that the issue was totally unrelated to the problems of last summer...but does not explain what the problem actually was.

    Hi,

It seems like I have been experiencing somewhat of a different issue to the rest of you when trying to log into my Natwest personal account. Whenever I put my user id in (which is basically my date of birth and a 4 digit unique ID at the end of it) the system responds back that it doesn't recognise me as being registered; I have been using this ID to login online for years. It requests me to register; So I have registered and the registration is not a problem. It lets you log into your account after registration, but once you log out and then try to log back in (generates the same user ID as before), the system responds back with the same message as before - "you are not registered". I have now registered 5 times with each login, which you can imagine is now frustrating.

I have spoken to Natwest online staff, and they think my account is being locked out because I'm inputting my details incorrectly (a load of crap and is not possible). I am convinced it is because of their technical fault, which their site claims they have fixed since yesterday.

Anyone else experienced the same issue? I have not had payment issues yet, but could it be worthy of compensation from RBS?

    Regards
    MT

My Nat West Visa debit card was "DECLINED" in an ATM at about 10.15 this morning. I knew how much was my account so it shouldn't have been declined from lack of funds. I did manage to log on to my on-line banking about 10 mins later and my account balance was correct.

So I've no idea if it was the actual atm at fault, or if today Nat West's on-line system is working but not their atm system ??

I've logged into NatWest online banking this afternoon without any problems.
