    Thanks petrichor....

charlene- i just started the gym last week...i reckon you should speak to one of the instructor there and talk about your long and short term objectives, then they can set up a plan for you. I am currently doing 10-15mins on 4 different cardio machines..so say about 1 hour, make sure you strech the muscles (AFTERWARDS)...unless you'll be in agony!!!

Greetings to all. Through avid reading of OS I have come across this thread. Wondered if I could ask you lovely people for some advice.

I have over the years lost (and gained) weight with Weightwatchers. I even clerked for them for some years. It is a system that usually works for me but I stopped really taking an interest when I got married (5 years ago) and since then have put on a huuuuge amount of flab - I reckon I need to lose at least 6 stone!! I have never weighed this much and it is totally getting me down. I went on holiday recently and vowed to sort it out - I soon won't be able to fit in plane seats!! I am 40 next year and hoping to go to New York with the lovely Mr H so would really like to get a grip and be FAB and 40 not FAT and 40 :o

My problem is I have lost the ability to lose weight (that sounds mad!!) I have tried WW again and found it a patronising experience. I have tried on my own and just have no will power. For me the club thing does tend to work well. Someone at work is doing Slimming World and is looking great - I am debating joining them but am unsure if I can get out of the WW point thing. I feel that I have just become totally confused about weight loss. I cook healthily but it is the chocolate, wine, white bread jam sandwiches etc. that !!!!!!s me up. Also money is tight so it is a big decision to pay out each week just to get weighed.

Sorry about the ramble but I feel that you guys may be able to help and give support/advice.

I got married 5 years ago (last week) and I was a slender size 14 (I am tall) on my wedding day. I since piled on several stone and it was hard to find the will power to stick to a diet for more than a day, expecially whilst on maternity leave following the birth of my lovely daughter. I had my 'lightbulb moment' in January this year. I realised that I had avoided properly looking the mirror for a long time and was just wearing clothes that were stretchy that streched with me as I gained weight. I also realsied that I have fewer than 5 photos of myself with my daughter cos i didn't want to record what I looked like. In January, I was forced to go shopping in a plus size shop and I had to look in the mirror to see how I looked. With both my husband and mother (bad combo) telling me how things looked nice on me whilst i was looking in the mirror and hating what I was seeing, I realised it was finally time to get rid of the excess weight I was carrying around. With 52 lbs lost to date, I am still carrying around 60lbs more than when I got married which I hope to lose by the end of the year.

I guess what I am trying to say is that you have to find the will power to lose weight for yourself. A lightbulb moment was the only way I was going to find that determination to commit to losing weight, because doing it half-heartedly is very difficult to remain motivated. If you can find something that will empower you it shoudl be easier. Good luck.

there are experts in the forum? where I never see them :)

The advice from Sa1sysoo is good advice and I would say and I try to do the same. Eat a little before and a little after as you body needs it. Petrichor thanks for that link, it was good reading.

Starting off, take it easy, your not aiming to run a marathon and any decent gym will almost interview you at the assesment to see what you want and so what you goals are going to be. If the machine have heart rate monitors use them. This website shows how to measure your heart rate and the various levels that can be used for training. http://www.brianmac.demon.co.uk/hrm1.htm

If you are anything like me and sometimes let the lack of progress or rather the feeling of lack of progress get you down, make a note of what you do, how far you got, how much calories was burned etc, that way you can see improvement, you can challenge yourself to improve and when things maynot be more visable you can look at what you have done and can do. I write down the time spent, level setting and calories burnt on each machine and record it on my phone, it has a notes function so I have notes going back to Febuary. A little anal I know, big it helps me and reassures me as well.

Slight side issue, but we go two new bikes yesterday in the gym, both have telly screens built in! Oddly enough, my energy burnt on the bike has reduced, but I dont mind. The telly screens are not plugged in yet as a full refurb is happening in August. Figner crossed.

Good Luck with the gym :)

I have just logged on to check new posts and found this thread.
Starting new job in two weeks time and have to walk part way for first time in ages. Decided to put it to good use and have decided to try and lose weight again, with extra walking as exercise.
Bought a cheap step counter while in Tescos today and coming across the thread has spurred me on
Have lots to lose but have done it before so hope that by my 50th birthday next year will look and feel much better.
Nice to have joined you all.

kerry I wholeheartdely agree with Efrieze the will, the motivation, that lightbulb moment has to come from you, from seeing a bad photo, or a nasty remark made by someone, or your health deteriorating or knowing that as you are makes you unhappy and no good can come of it...

There comes a time when all the fibbing to oneself has to stop, when going into the plus sizes store is not what you want to do, really you want more choice of clothes, ask me if when I started this in January did I think I needed to loose 4 stone and I would have laughed and said no way, that I was prob only a stone or maybe 2 at the very most over-weight, that was fibbing to myself, everyone else could see I had put on a tidy sum of weight but I was completely in denial as we go on through life but at some stage it has to be faced...

    welcome tescoqueen

My lightbulb moment as it were was some very awful photos of a family gathering that I would like to burn!! my health, my BMI had shot up to 32, the taunting at the bus stops, the lack of nice clothes, the keep saying to H and the kids ' oh no I am alright here , you go and play or go out and I refused to join in, there were more no thank you's in my life than yes please and it really had to stop for my sake and the ones that love me...
