Cheap snack ideas - stop me buying crisps!

    My work bag is always full of little containers either full and on the way into work or empty and on the way home :o

    I am another fan of mixed fruit & nuts - very satisfying.
    I also take in cottage cheese to eat with crackers - my fave is the the cheese with pineapple or you could have it plain or with chives.
    Bread sticks or celery/carrot sticks with hummus.
    Mixed seeds, eg pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds.
    Also fruit - chop it up to make it more appealing.
    This one sounds a bit weird but sometimes I have a handful of dry branflakes. They have a bit of salt in them and give you a bit of a carb boost mid-afternoon.

    Not bizarre at all, I've done that one too -forgot all about it. I used to sprinkle with garam masala.

    I'm going to try making these today, will try with garlic salt as not too keen on soy sauce.

    Bags of sunflower seeds are half price at tesco at the moment.

    My Mum buys little tubs of seeds - pumpkin and sunflower - done with tahini, peanut butter and soy sauce. This is easily replicated in your own kitchen - guess who said "how much!!!!!" and had a go! About 1 tbsp of each did a bag each of sunflower and pumpkin - though I notice in Mum's the ratio is 2:1 in favour of sunflower - obviously cheaper.

    Roasted soya nuts are nice - cook soya beans, toss in oil and flavourings and proceed as above.

    Hello.
    For their school packed lunches my boys always take sandwiches or salad or pasta, a piece of fruit, a small chocolate bar - eg Penguin/Club and a packet of crisps.
    I have now started baking my own cookies so they now take those instead of the choc bars.
    However, I cannot think of a home-made savoury snack to give them in place of the crisps.
    Any suggestions most welcome, preferably something that I can freeze so that I can just make one batch for the whole week and take them from the freezer each day.
    My boys are 10 and 8 and it has to be something as an "extra" to their sandwiches/salad if you see what I mean!

    Breadsticks (crissini I believe) are easy to make, loads of suggestions on the web. You could try homemade cheese straws too.

    You could try savoury muffins or scones but they might be a bit too dense. You can make your own vegetable srisps by using a peeler to shave bits off. You can have beetroot, parsnip and sweet potato.

    Perhaps you could make your own crisps? We used to help my mum with that as kids and it was such fun - got chunkier crisps that way too.

    Could even make crisps from other veg and see if they like that. I've had parsnip ones, they were quite good - even though I hate parsnips.

    Either that or you could make cheese and marmite straws, used to devour them pretty fast!
