All DVD players* will have Region 2 badge on them and instructions stating region 2, even if they are multi-region, this is so they can get the DVD license to make DVD players, the DVD licensing don't like manufactures openly selling players as multi-region.

*Those sold for use in R2 regions.

Thanks for that explanation. I understand now. I did manage to borrow a Region 1 DVD from a neighbour & it plays even when the player is set to PAL. Better picture quality, though, when set to NTSC.

But how is someone who knows nothing about DVDs (i.e. me!) supposed to know all this, without going all over the Internet. IMO, this is what a manual is for!

Funny, but that almost reads as though you think it's okay to have a TV without a license.

Why should you have to buy a licence to watch DVDs?

Anyone any advice on the best and cheapest DVD Recorder, really confused re + & - and ability to play various regions, is hard drive type better or copy to dvd?
    Please help.

Oliveoil, You can have one that copies to hard drive only, copies to DVD's only (the cheapest type) of copies to hard drive and DVD. It depends what you want it for really.
If you record and watch on the same tv then I think the hard drive type is better. However if you want to record in your lounge and watch it on your bedroom tv then one that records to DVD's is better.
If you want to be able to do both then the type that records to both would be better (but more expensive).
Don't worry about + & - you just buy the appropriate DVD's. Virtually all can be made multi regional.
