I got the Tesco one at Christmas and it broke around 3 weeks later. It kept saying error when I put discs in.

As it was a present and the person didn't keep the reciept I don't think I can get my money back can I?

If the dvd player is badged as Tesco they should give you your money back. If you have no receipt they will only give the amount it is selling for the day you take it back. I took back printer cartridges this week as my printer had broken and they were quite happy to refund the money cos they were Tesco branded. Because the DVD has been used they might not take the same attitude, but its worth a try. They can only say no.

You do not need a TV license to watch DVD's, so no-one should be passing on your details to the TV licensing authority. If you buy a TV, they should do. If you buy a monitor that cannot display TV using it's own tuner and plug a DVD player in to it then no license is required.

You can have a TV without a licence if you don't use it to watch broadcast TV. You need to let the TV licensing people know that you have one and you are only using to watch prerecorded video and dvds. My daughter did just this for a year and the only thing they said was that they might do a spot inspection to make sure it wasn't connected to an aerial, but as she wasn't using it for TV she was quite happy.

This may be slightly off the subject but does anyone know if any of these bargain dvd players are compatible with the cables supplied with Sony dvd players?

I've had our sony dvd player for a few years with surround sound but it's permanently on 'headphone' mode so we can't use the speaker system. I was hoping to buy a new dvd player and just connect the speakers to it - would this work?

    Any suggestions very welcome!

Click here for Cheap Divx DVD players @ Ebuyer....

If you are after a DVD with Divx compatability click above link.

Divx DVD players are great as they play all sorts of formats that a normal DVD player can play but AVI files aswell. Great if you get alot of movies from the internet! Save hours on converting files. Just burn you favourite films in AVI format onto a CD and pop it in. even better you can fit about 5 onto a DVD! Saving space and time all for an extra couple of quid!

If you are thinking of getting a new dvd player go for one that is divx compatable.

    What is Divx?
DivX is a digital video compression format based on the MPEG-4 technology. DivX files can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time without sacrificing the quality of the digital video. Often used on the Internet to exchange video files.

Do i need any special Divx software to convert the AVI files to burn to CD/DVD?

If you are burning it as an AVI file it doesn't need conversion - assuming the player plays .avi format.

Just select "burn as a data file"

I assume you mean there is a cable over and above the standard Scart connection.

Sony, are bugg'rs for always trying to set things up in their own way, hoping to capture an exclusive market. BTW most Sony hardware is actually made by other manufacturers so please don't be misled by that "Sony" badge - it isn't all its cracked up to be.

Maybe someone else with specific information can help out better, but if you could take a pic of the back end of your player and post it here we might be able to get a better idea of what you are looking for.

There may well be a "workaround" to get you fixed up.

An afterthought - these wouldn't simply be RCA outputs by any chance?
    Looking like this?

I think the triple points for Tescos may only be through Tesco Direct - if you buy the DVD player in store then you will only get your normal points.
  • Can this dvd player play home recorded dvds?

    Many thanks
  • I own the compaks one and its brillant. It changes between regions automatically and can even swop between PAL and NTSC format discs automatically. Only thing it has no display ( my model anyway) but for so little money who cares! It shows up my last DVD player which I spent over £100 on

Yes, Compacks have made some good players over the years.

All DVD players sold in the UK (and other R2 countries) will play NTSC and PAL, due to region 2 covering Europe (a PAL area) and Japan (an NTSC) country.

Many of these non-big brand machines not only play PAL and NTSC pure, they will also transcode on the fly from one to the other.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
