Cheapest DVD players - Prices now sub-£16

UPDATE NOTE 9 May 23.22
Since writing this yesterday, the Amazon player has both gone up to £25.99 and then gone back to £15.99. So just be careful to check the price listed when you click it. Amazon prices do change, but the price it says on the page when you click is what you pay.
DVD players are now cheaper than ever, even if you want a multi-region machine. Some of these players have been in the weekly e-mail before, but now prices have dropped even further.
The Cheapest Deals (always check the prices haven't changed)
Every DVD has a regional encoding, a number that corresponds to whether it is designed for Europe, the Americas, Asia etc. The aim of this is it allows DVD producers to control distribution and prices across the world.
In other words you can't play a USA DVD in a European player. Thus you can't buy it early or cheaper over there, you have to wait until it's launched over here.
Multi-regions are machines that by design or accident, allow you to play the DVDs of any region. I say by accident, as in some cases it's simply a result of the fact that the players are mass produced and then assigned a region later, yet by inputting a simple code in the remote control you can switch the region at will.
There is NOTHING illegal about multi-region players, you can buy DVDs anywhere and watch them on any player. This is an attempted technological lock out by big movie company interests, and we shouldn't let them try and bully us. And as they're multi-region it means you will be able to buy cheap discs abroad and play them at home.
Already bought the Amazon DVD player?
If you have bought the Amazon DVD player in the last 30 days for the higher price, there's a sneaky trick which means you can claim back the difference and get it for the current cheaper price.
Simply visit your account and look at each invoice from the last thirty days. Click on each item to view its current price. Compare this to the price you paid and if there's a difference, copy down the order number and go to the 'Return and Refunds Contact Form' page to report it.
PS. If you spot a cheap DVD player worth of mention, please report it below, just click reply

- £15.99 Multi-region player. Amazon is offering a Compacks DVD6972 Multi-region 2 Channel* DVD Player for £15.99. As it's over £15, delivery is free. When ordering Amazon automatically selects the first class option which costs you extra, so make sure you change it to FREE supersaver delivery!
- £17.84 single region, plus ClubCard points. Tesco has its Value DVD player* for £17.84, and you get 17 Clubcard points (worth 4p each if redeemed on Tesco ClubCard Deals) so that's effectively £17.16. Yet, this isn't a multi-region player (although according to some techie MoneySavers below, it can be easily made into one). UPDATE: 9 May. Tesco Direct is now offering triple points on this DVD player making it £15.80 in total.
- £17.89 single region. Argos is offering an Alba DVD62 DVD* player for £17.89. Again it isn't automatically a multi-region player. This is available online and you can arrange to pick it up in store to save on postage and packing.

* Using these links helps the site stay ad-free and free to use, as they’re ‘affiliated links’ which invisibly take you via commercial price comparison services like Moneysupermarket or Find, which then pay this site per click. You shouldn’t notice any difference, the links don’t impact the product at all and the editorial line (the things I write) is NEVER impacted by the revenue. If it isn’t possible to get an affiliate link for the best product, it is still recommended and still included. For the sake of transparency go to amazon.co.uk, argos.co.uk or tesco.com for an unaffiliated link. Click on the following link for more details on how this site’s financed.

Click here for Cheap Divx DVD players @ Ebuyer....
If you are after a DVD with Divx compatability click above link.
Divx DVD players are great as they play all sorts of formats that a normal DVD player can play but AVI files aswell. Great if you get alot of movies from the internet! Save hours on converting files. Just burn you favourite films in AVI format onto a CD and pop it in. even better you can fit about 5 onto a DVD! Saving space and time all for an extra couple of quid!
If you are thinking of getting a new dvd player go for one that is divx compatable.
What is Divx?
DivX is a digital video compression format based on the MPEG-4 technology. DivX files can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time without sacrificing the quality of the digital video. Often used on the Internet to exchange video files.0 -
I have bought the Tesco one for my daughter, it's a very basic model which is perfect for her. Works just fine, she's had it since before christmas and she's not known for looking after her stuff so that bodes well for Tesco!I'm an MSE winner!
2x tickets to the o2 Wireless Festival :j
Summer Sports Set - trampoline, swingball and paddling pool worth £100 :T0 -
Note if you buy the Tesco DVD player and use your Clubcard, you will likely find that that they have transferred your details to the TV Licensing enforcement people who check if you have a TV License. If you pay cash and did not use your Clubcard then they would not know who you were and could not do so. Anyone know if Amazon does this or not?0

Does anyone have a link on how to 'unlock' the Alba one?
I have a different Alba one, but I am wondering if the same sequence of buttons might also unlock it?0 -

Is it one listed on: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks?dvdplayer=alba&hits=50&Search=Search ?It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Also - if you buy from Amazon through the Nectar card site - you must register your card - you get 2 points per £ spent - sometimes there are extra points for set periods, just not at the moment

Quite right too..why should some pay for their license and some not..be good idea if this was also done with tv's as well0
-
It's standard practice (law?) to have to complete a notification form for the TV Licensing authority when purchasing a TV.0
