I bought a ALBA DVD62XI from Sainsburys in Street last week for either £16 or £17. Thought that was a bargin in itself, then came the big plus, it plays AVI and WMA files, which is more important to me than whether it was region free or not.

I got the Tesco one at Christmas and it broke around 3 weeks later. It kept saying error when I put discs in.

As it was a present and the person didn't keep the reciept I don't think I can get my money back can I?

The is Compacks DVD6972 Multi-region 2 Channel coming up as £25.99 today.
  • Could you please double check the amazon dvd players at £15.99, I followed your link but it took me to a £25.99 player, however it is the model as described.

Thanks, hope to hear something soon.

Note if you buy the Tesco DVD player and use your Clubcard, you will likely find that that they have transferred your details to the TV Licensing enforcement people who check if you have a TV License. If you pay cash and did not use your Clubcard then they would not know who you were and could not do so. Anyone know if Amazon does this or not?

Funny, but that almost reads as though you think it's okay to have a TV without a license.
Elements of the past & future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

Technically they should make you fill in a TV licensing form when you buy one, I would expect that Amazon would send your details to the Authority electronically

You do not need a TV license to watch DVD's, so no-one should be passing on your details to the TV licensing authority. If you buy a TV, they should do. If you buy a monitor that cannot display TV using it's own tuner and plug a DVD player in to it then no license is required.

There is an excellent website for unlocking the code system on most DVD players. About 95% of single Region players can be easily unlocked. Go to:-
    https://www.dvdexploder.com.
    Good luck.

I find http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks the easiest one to navigate around.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Yes you can get your money back/replacement.
Tesco is subject to the Sale of Goods Act even if you don't have the receipt. That covers you for the first year.
Everything you buy has to be fit for purpose and has a reasonable notional life. Three weeks may be acceptable for some things but not a dvd player!

Life is easier if you have the receipt but if you take everything to them, especially their own packaging they'll find it hard to say it's not their product.

Does you friend have credit card slip? Or a clubcard? They can trace the purchase through the clubcard if that was swiped.
