Neat, mummified, rugby ball shaped packages that are easy for the postman and protect the contents really well will now have to be spread out into a longer, wider but thinner 'small parcel' that will surely be more prone to damage... Just doesn't make sense.

What was wrong with using weight as the main factor and a maximum size?

I get stuck behind people asking for advice on sending packages in the post office enough as it is....
Oh for gods sake thanks again royal mail for messing with my head!
This for me is very bad-most of my items are light but bulky-ish well bigger than the 8cm or 16cm rule.

Currently 75% of my parcels go at £2.20 now they will be £5.20!
Royal mail can do one. I'd rather have the free tracking that hermes offers and the extra £5 compo cover.
Are royal mail trying to shoot themselves in the foot?

It won't be worth the gamble for me that the po staff will know what they are doing and not just charge the £5.20 as standard. I can't be doing with going to the po to be told it's £5.20 then going back home to print out hermes labels instead. GRRR

    because as you can see
    weight isnt the only factor
larger packets take up more space(of course weight causes its own issues)
more space on trucks, planes and within the delivery set up
I have posted many many times on the future of RM and the slash and burn system in play
most of the 'plans' are firefighting exercises

Why doesn't MArtin or someone pick up on this - this is headline news.
The fact postage stamps aren't rising is completely hiding the fact that most parcels are doubling!!! You have a month left to sell your items!!!

In fairness there has been a formal consultation about this and I don't think any of us are really that susrprised at the quite large changes being made. With the politics behind what is going on with the Royal Mail and post office generally these sort of changes were inevitable

Yes it does affect a few of us quite badly, but we have a month to get our head round it and decide whether to drop some lines or find couriers or new packaging. Personally I will be doing a mixture of both, some lines I will definitely drop, th evalue of the item will mean it is going to be unreasonable to post out, However as per my post last night I have already arranged to buy new boxes that fit just within the new rates and will use those to judge what I can feasibly list and what I should avoid buying. I am just off to see a courier now to make sure the openeing times etc shown on the website are correct,.

The annoyance for me is the reduction in insurance for non tracked post, but again I will have to adjust and I fear it is my overseas buyers that will suffer as I will now be looking to limit my non UK sales to less than £20.

I'm probably luckier than most in that I do sell the majority of my goods for less than £20 and I do feel sorry for those who have now got possibly got higher standard mailing costs plus have the need to use tracking when they haven't needed to in the past

No there is an exemption the small print is so small as to be almost unreadable, but a small parcel can also be a cube up to 16 x 16x 16 cms, so a 6 inch cube is within that.

    edit:

Exceptions apply. The following items are also priced as Small Parcels. Parcels that measure up to: Length: 16cm, Width: 16cm, Depth: 16cm.

Also roll or cylinder shaped parcels that measure up to Length: 45cm, Diameter: 8cm. For more information about how to present your mail please visit

WHAAAT? How confusing is that???? So it should read "a cube no bigger than 16x16x16 OR maximum width 8cm 45cm 35cm"

I've written to the BBC with the story.

My worry is though that the counter staff will opt for charing the £5.20 for anything that looks over 8cm. When you have a ton of stuff to post or you ask a family member ect to do it for you. It's more than likely going to be down to if the counter staff know what they are doing. Very costly mistake if they don't charge the £2.60 on a bag of parcels!

I think i will be going with the extra 40p and dropping off at the parcel shop as i'd rather pay the extra and not worry about the po staff mucking up.

I assume the extra time spent in post office counter staff having to get a tape measure out to measure anything near the borderline will outweigh the extra time they have for all those people using couriers now instead.

There are size limits now - it's not a new thing. I can see some disasters if people expect couriers like collect + to be poised for a big increase in business.
Anyway, ballistic b has written to the beeb. That should sort it.
