The main political parties might find more people wanted to vote for them if they decided they might like to represent more than a tenth of the electorate.
There are ever fewer well off people in our country and those that are are seeing their wealth spiral beyond the wildest dreams of those on the next rung down.
Everyone else is enduring plummeting real wages, a declining standard of living and job insecurity.
Cameron, Milliband, Clegg et al might live in some privileged fantasy land where the head of RBS can whine that he is poorly paid at only getting £10 million a year, and actually receive credence, but they surely can't expect people who are trying to eke out a living on £20k to keep voting for them.
The sad thing is that this justifiable anger instead of being turned on the elites seems to be benefitting fringe nut bags like UKIP who have a single issue agenda against "foreigners".0 -

Go on, Toastie, admit it. You haven't read the UKIP manifesto, have you?
In fact it's a damned good bet that all you know about them is what the BBC/Guardian axis of drivel tells you.0 -
Dave Milliband won't be any better. There is an arrogant "I know what's good for you better than you do" about him. All he will do is extend the client state and make yet more people dependent on them.
They cannot be trusted with the economy.
Consider that ther left rely on the client state but the right rely on a property owning, debt ridden population most of whom are too busy paying off their debts to object to what is happening to them.
I do agree D Milliband is not that different to E Milliband its just that he has a better image (think Blair and Brown, Cameron and Osborne).Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. What was said? Did "she" whoever she is confirm it was still policy, or confirm it was dropped?
Seemed very much as if they hadn't quite decided on 5live.0 -

Angela Eagle. Labour policy was to reintroduce 10p tax banding.0 -

You mean things like 55% of its voters thought immigration was the biggest issue in Eastleigh?
Ok fair point I will read it.......just in case rugged has not got the time.....
Their policies are: Flat rate income tax, making retired people pay NI, cutting Employers NI and relacing with tax on employees, abolish inheritance tax, vast unfunded infrastructure and defence spending proposals, repeal the Human Rights Act, require visas for all visitors, freeze immoigration for 5 years, build more prisons, lots of unfunded promises on NHS and Education, remove means testing from benefits and pensions and freeze public sector pensions, build loads of nuclear power stations, retain the Royal Mail, abolish directly elected national asswemblies, etc.
To be fair not all of them are barking and many if done might be attractive. But they are a collection of populist proposals and largely unfunded promises of the sort that the unelectable can make with impunity.
I particularly liked "Stimuilate the Economy by leaving the EU".
But to vote for them you would have to believe they were serious and could afford the policies. Personally I think we would live in a protectionist, isolated country in complete turmoil if these policies came to pass. But if its affordable it is an alternative view of the world.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. You are assuming that UKIP only take votes off the Tories. That's not correct as has been shown.
No, in Eastleigh they did take votes from the Lib Dems and maybe a small number from Labour (who did retain the same small % as in 2010). But I do think that if they take anything like 10% from the Tories in their target seats they will not be able to win unless they also take a lot from Labour which I think is less likely when Labour is second to them.
The main uncertainty is how much the anti-EU agenda influences the outcome of the next GE. As Wookie noted significant Lib Dem supporters voted UKIP in Eastleigh, yet exit polls suggested that EU was only an issue for 9%.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. She did say something like this but it was not clear if she was saying its a firm commitment (unlikely) or a policy/ aspiration they wanted to do.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment.
