In Superdrug you can buy little spray bottles for about .80p which you can fill with water and keep in the fridge - I suppose you could do it with any well-washed trigger bottle then it would be free; if you keep a good supply in you can make sure you always have a bottle handy. They're useful on a hot night to spray on your face - it really helps you cool down. If you can't get to sleep and feel bored and you husband/wife/partner is fast asleep, it's great fun spraying them as well - until they wake up!

I also keep cheap baby-wipes in the fridge and they are really effective at cooling you down or you could buy some muslin which is about £2.00 a metre and cut it into flannel-sized squares, wet them and keep them in plastic bags in the fridge - they'll be reuseable because you can wash them.

Fans are getting cheaper now so it would be worth investing in another one; last year Sainsbury's had them starting at under £7.00 but don't wait until the first sign of a heat-wave because everyone else will have the same idea! Oh, and most importantly, drink plenty of fluids!

Just realised you wanted to keep pets cool as well - dogs would probably love the water sprays but, as long as they can find some shade, they usually cope - apparently, panting keeps them cool. Plenty of water available for them, too! Hope you survive the heat!

    Hi sammy_kaye,

We have an older thread with lots of ideas that should help so I've merged your thread with it.

The suggestions on this thread may help too: Keeping cool at nighttime

    Hi peeps

I went into superdrug today and they had an empty spray bottle with a fan on which was reduced form £2 down to 30p so ive brought that and at the first sign of the heat coming i intend to stick it in the fridge adn keep it there until its really needed.

Also ive kept an eye on my flat today - ive noticed that i only tend ot get morning sun and then in the day my front door and hallway where pooch is is left in the shade so im thinking if i can get away with leaving the front door open with the doggy gate in it - not only will he have any slight breeze thats passing but he'll also be in the shade too - plus his water bowl is round the corner (an L shaped hallway) so if i put a few ice cubes in it, it will stay nice and cool for him.

Also I found a cheap ice lolly maker today for 50p too so i can make some homemade ice lollies with the little moulds i have which will help keep my little boy cool too - someone also said about putting the suncream bottle in the fridge too so its nice and cool when you put it on.

    any more hints?

This may be a bit odd, but I find that if I can cool my feet down the rest of me cools down. So I tend to put a very cold damp towel over my feet for a while in bed (above the covers) and then I am fine.

And one poster was right - dogs pant to cool down as that is the way they sweat.
If you wait for perfect conditions, nothing would ever get done! :T
    I'm not short - I'm condensed awesome! :p

Good afternoon: The Energy Saving Trust has produced a guide to reducing overheating in the home http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/uploads/documents/housingbuildings/CE129%20-%20reducing%20overheating%20a%20designers%20guide.pdf

..perhaps a bit technical but a start!

Really cant be a worse time for posting ths as i am sitting in a jumper with my heating on however....Put a wet towel in the freezer and put it on your feet when you go to bed. This is for when it is really hot and so most excess will evaporate and not wet the bed too much

freeze a 2 litre bottle filled with water, then stand it on a plate in front of a fan in a room you want to 'air condition' (but make sure the water won't get near the fan)

only lasts a while but for a short term quick fix to cool a kids room for bedtime was ideal for us last year

    Cheap ice lollies

Either buy the moulds from supermarkets and fill with diluting juice, or use the slimmest (plastic) glasses you can find in your house, fill with juice, add a stick (cocktail stick / chopstick / old washed lolly stick) and use elastic bands to keep the stick in place if needed, and then freeze overnight.

And voila, ice lollies that only cost as much as the diluting juice involved. And you can obviously reuse the molds over and over again.

Warning - if you use a big glass you might not be able to fit the whole thing in your mouth! I accidently made a huge one the other week and it took me an hour to finish off...

I feel ill when it is really hot so I fill a plant spray bottle with cold water and put it in the fridge and go back and forth and keep spraying myself and others with it.
