The Great 'Ways to keep cool' Hunt

Obviously the simple answer is to do a house-swap with Mazza245 - how I covet those lovely cold prison cells when the weather gets hot... Weird, isn't it? - look how many of us there are who hate hot weather! I can't stand the heat and can't wait for autumn to arrive - love it. And yet still the weather forecasters drivel on about "lovely weather" when the temperature rises. Once it's above about 23 deg. I'm ready to emigrate to the north pole. Can't find any clothes to wear that don't make me sweat and I'm too old to reveal all in a sundress or bikini. Do you need a house-sitter, Mazza245?0

Hello everyone, this is the first time i've actually ever started a thread, so apologies if this is the wrong place or there is already something covering it (though i have tried to check)
In the the winter months people often ask for the cheapest and most effective ways to keep warm, well, its summer now, i'm sitting in a boiling hot room and i was wondering if anyone has any good OS or otherwise suggestions to keep cool!
Any suggestions are welcome, its unbearable in here. I'm more interested in non permament type things (its a rented falt) though anything is welcome (in desperation i even considered http://www.gmilburn.ca/ac/pete_ac.html :rotfl:)
So, any ideas everyone? Many thanks!

(Also, as an aside, what is the advantage of a tower fan over a bog standard one?)0 -
Open all the windows and doors and get a draft flowing
Have a cool shower
Wear less clothes
Get a water mister and spray your face
Wear a cobber http://www.sunhelmets.com/cobber.htm
or make one, using the expanding water gel crystals bought from garden centres etc0 -
Get a lightweight towel or cotton sheet and soak it in water and hang over the curtain pole with the windows open. As the air flows through its cooled by the water.Sorting my life out one day at a time0

Thick lined curtains (or blankets or whatever - if need be) at the windows - kept closed during the day. It helps to keep the sun out in the first place a bit.
I do the opened windows each side and a pedestal fan in front of one each side blowing the hot air out and cool air in of an evening as well to get the bedroom cool enough to sleep in.0 -
For twenty minutes before bed, pull back the covers and direct a fan on to them.
When you get into bed it'll be lovely and cool-just doesn't stay that way for too long though:rolleyes:The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter

I like the cobber idea! Will definitely look into that!
I'm quite unlucky in that i have one tiny opening window, yet essentially one of my walls is just a huuge window that doesnt open and also happens to face the sun! So i've kind of run out of ideas! Yesterday the same problem occured and the solution was to go to the beach
but today i need to work from home! Some really good ideas thanks everyone!!!! 0 -
Hi somethingwitty,
These threads from last summer might help:
Keeping cool in the hot weather
Hot nights
I'll add your thread to the first one later to keep all the suggestions together.

The best way in our house:
1. All windows are opened first thing in morning to allow a good blow through.
2. All windows that are South facing are closed and the curtains drawn all day to stop the sun getting in in the first place.
3. Vent windows that are North and West facing are opened all day for air flow (closed OBVIOUSLY!!) when we go out.
4. Turned off the hot water completely. Having a tank full of hot water in the airing cupboard was a real issue - it heated the whole of the upstairs, no matter how lagged it was! Have showers instead and boiled a kettle to do the washing up. Bathing the kids though does mean having it on for half an hour before hand - just make sure you remember to turn it off!0 -
Ah thankyou i did figure there would be a thread like that just couldnt seem to find it!
thanks all!
