  • This is also my favourite solution to overheating during the day. At night I have something called a Chillow which is basically a flat "hot" waterbottle filled with cold water. I have it in bed at my feet, but it is comfortable enough to put your head on. I got it from either QVC or Ideal World on TV.

P.S. Chillows are available on https://www.idealvitality.tv for £44.99 for two (singles no longer available at the moment). I know this is not a cheap solution, but it has made sleep possible when nothing else has.

A tip I learned whils't on holiday camping in the outback a couple of years ago(much to the envy of my grandchildren) was to have a couple of wet teatowels and place one round the back of your neck, swap it for the other as it warms up,sounds really simple but it does help.
What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots
  • I know this one sounds TOTALLY nuts, but it worked in the really hot weather last year...

I made a window sized covering out of tin foil, sellotaping it all together, then taping it to the window. I Know, nuts. It went up in the morning, and kept the light/heat out. It also works as a cheap and easy blackout now the evenings are really light. I was trying to recreate the metal shutter effect they have in France... and it really works. And I can't stand sewing!

The only problem is, last summer when I was taping it up on my daughters window, my neighbours looked up quizzically, and I jokingly said, "the aliens are coming" and they have avoided us ever since. I don't know why...
  • Can anyone help me with prickly heat, i have recently come back from Spain and am going again in four weeks. My right arm is covered in prickly heat. Someone also mentioned Snake Brand/St Lukes Prickly Heat Powder, do you know where I can get some or anything else that takes the itching out, HELP PLEASE.

I have also seen advertised a water-activated cooling pillow (in one of those "indispensable products" catalogues found in magazines). I do not have one of these, but am very tempted!

I can vouch for these pillows, called chillows and available from ideal world shopping channel. They are a thin foam that has some sort of gel in it that is activated with water. This then cools you when you rest on it. I'm not sure about the technicalities but its great, my mum bought me mine last year as i have a condition where my body does not regulate my temp and i REALLY suffer in the hot weather. It really does make a big difference, and they are also good to use with migraines etc.

Just put a search in for these and there are various sites selling these singly. Roughly £25 pp 2.95 which is a lot cheaper than Ideal World. Amazon is one.

I bought some neck coolers! (cant remember exactly what they are called) from QVC last year (4) for under £15 incl p&p. They are filled will gel and you need to put them in cold water so they expand. You wrap in around you neck and tie and it keeps you cool all day. When the gel starts drying up it shrinks, so you just place it in cold water again, but I find I have to only do this once a day.
  • Spray some water on the curtains.... at night ... to be used with a fan... also, dont forget to open your windows in the morning... any remnant wetness needs to dry off, unless you want your room to smell damp... hope this helps...

I got a pair of Chillows off ebay and there was no p & p! £44.48

My OH says its an excellent cooler (suffering with eczema he overheats alot at night), though it has sort of scrumpled up inside, not sure how we're gonna smooth it out......mine is still in its box.;)

Got two cos I don't want to be fighting him for his when the sun comes up and stays. I hate hot weather, we're already only using a 4.5 tog duvet....don't know where we'll go from here!
