If I ring an 0870 number I generally plead poverty and get them to ring me back!! It usually works - even with Sky!Semaj0

Hi,I recently received a bill from BT for telephone calls made to an 08714 715640 number. I have no knowledge of this number which apparently is registered to 'Medius Communications Ltd'. It has been suggested that this may have occurred as a result of an automated computer dialler. I have tried to discuss the matter with BT but this appears to be impossible to do (They have all gone to India!). Letters fail to elicit any information other that their records are correct and i must pay.
Has anyone encountered similar problems and successfully avoided having to pay a disputed bill? Your advice would be welcome.

Hi Girt.
If you dont get any joy here.Trying posting on this site :http://www.the-scream.co.uk/forums/f30.html? where the 0871 dialler fraud experts hang out.PF.0 -
unfortuantly it seems some of the o870/0845 numbers on say no to 0870 are a little out of date. Tried to fone o2 on a few of the recommended 0800 or geo numbers, and it seems o2 have cottoned on and asked me where I got the number from. I said a friend give it to me, and their reply was, we can't deal with your queiry on this line  I gotta say I wasn't impressed.0

I often call Lloyds TSB on their "international numbers" without any problems.
The credit card number is 01702 278272.0 -

I hate 0870s with a PASSION - but rather than rant on about the offenders, who lets face it - don't give a stuff; why not launch a new award for the best companies who go out of their way to avoid them - a bit like the "Good English" award? It would help promote the issue - and if it received decent enough exposure might just encourage bad practicioners to tidy up their act to get on the list. Well - OK, maybe not given the amount of dosh they make - but it might help a bit :-)
This sounds like a terrific idea! It could be called something along the lines of "Real Number Organisation" award ... although I'm sure one of us could come up with a more catchy name, such as "No 08 is great", but then 0800 and 0808 number are free (from landlines) - but, as noted earlier, often more expensive than regular numbers when called from a mobile.
I think a lot of the problem is that people are blatantly unaware, even when the cost per minute is indicated. 8p doesn't sound like much, it's only when you realise you'll be on hold for 20+ minutes that it suddenly starts to get expensive! It's much the same concept as many people not realising store card interest rates. Again, it's pointed out, but so many don't understand that 29% means £29 interest for every £100 owing.0
