  • I've just found another site that lists UK businesses with their geographical numbers instead of 0845 or 0870.

    http://www.mycartel.co.uk/

You can search UK wide, areas such as East Anglia or by town

    Hi All,

I've just noticed that Saynoto0870 have setup a special webpages for those wanting more information and in making a response to the Ofcom's consultation on 084x/087x numbers and the revenue sharing/cost of these calls.

    More information here:

I'm afraid it doesn't, but you can do a search by business name & region.

SayNoTo0870 didn't have either of the Argos stores I was looking for earlier, but this site came up with geograpic numbers for both of the ones I was after, & a host of others too.

I did another search for Tesco, & whilst it does still bring some stores up as 0845 numbers there are quite a few geographical numbers.

Not a complete answer in itself, but another string to the bow :D

Am I in the wrong place or what?
Seems like the last message was a year ago.
What I want to know is why do I have to wait a year for 0870 numbers to stop?
I was under the impression that "Off Com" was on the side of the consumer.
Though why am I surprised? Big business is the winner every time.
  • Make your views known to Ofcom. This is the only way to stop the 0844, 0845, 0870 and 0871 scam once and for all.

I think I have recently advanced our cause no end!

My daughter had indirectly fallen foul of a company using the internet to sell combined hotel/parking at airports. On her return from holiday her car had been broken into and valuables stolen from the boot. Okay they shouldn't have been left there, but the hotel has the sytem of leaving the car keys behind the front wheel, if you return after 11pm. Good service eh? On complaining to the internet company they said they were not responsible for the hotel/car park. Hotel said there were disclaimer notices eveywhere - Trading Standards say there is loads of case law that these are supported in court!!
I then tried Watchdog the consumers champion!! Oh yes, they have an 0870 number for you to advise them of the problem. I sent an email to the site webmaster complaining bitterly that it was outrageous for Watchdog to use this money making method on a programme allegedly working for the benefit of consumers. The following evening I watched Watchdog to see if any comment was made on my daughter's case - of course not! But at the end of the programme and on the website it now shows:- phone 0208 8535 1000 and I call that SUCCESS!! You can now call them using the cheapest phone provider you have.
Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS
  • Manrow. I doubt very much if your e-mail changed their mind. I think the ongoing pressure from the https://www.saynoto0870.com site, and the new producer was the main reason.

I recently contacted Virgin Wines with an enquiry and received an e-mail which indicated that if you ordered by telephone or had any queries you had to phone an 0870 number. I e-mailed them stating that I objected to calling 0870 numbers and this is the reply I received :-

    Hi,
Thank you for contacting Virgin Wines.

Thanks for your feedback, I can understand what you are saying I don't like calling 0870 numbers especially on my mobile. To be honest with you we do not have a lot of comments on this and if we did we would call our customer straight back.

Once again thanks for you feedback.

If you need to get in touch please reply to this email or, if you prefer, you could call us when it suits you on 0870 164 9593, Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm and Saturday to Sunday 10am to 5pm.

Thanks again. Sarah Porter Virgin Wines

Obviously they completely missed the point, but it is also obvious that the majority of people ignore the fact that they are dialling an 0870 number and just dial whatever number is presented to them!!

That I believe is true that's why I'm recommending in my ofcom consultation response that any call that isn't a geographical should have call announcements when called from a mobile because calls cost upto 40ppm which is significantly higher than from a landline. If people were made aware of this then there would be more outrage and companies would receive more complaints, which in turn they may consider to start using a geographical instead.
