Just used https://www.saynoto870.com to look up the non-0870 number for Simply Computers, saved myself about 60 pence in call charges. I wonder if their staff would have been as polite if they knew I was calling them for free. Only a few pence but it all helps. Thanks. :)
  • From the above link to the Ofcom article:
Few businesses offer 0845 or 0870 numbers alongside alternative geographic contact numbers.

It seems that all businesses offer only these two numbers these days. The only company I've rung in ages, that offers a landline customer number, is Lakeland. I just don't understand how this has been allowed to happen. >:(

I think that is what Ofcom meant. Few businesses offer both 0870 and geographic numbers.

I see Ofcom have said they will produce a plain english version of the consultation document so consumers can respond !! No sign of it on the website :(

    Oh yes there is !!

  • I checked the "say no" site some time ago and am delighted to say it has saved me quite a few "pennies".
I went through checking all the contacts I may have to phone, wrote down the alternative numbers on a card and keep the card by the phone.
    Great!

Nearly three weeks ago I ordered a mobile from Dialaphone, it arrived minus half of the'free' Bluetooth equipment and instructions, tried to phone on their 0870 no, constantly busy, sent E mail, told to try 0870 no.! Total vicious circle!

I then wrote to their MD telling him exactly what I thought of their rip-off number and I have received a letter from his PR acknowledging my letter, but three days later, no contact from them! So please be warned, their customer service is totally and utterly useless!

    I use http://www.saynoto0870.com/search.php

Sky, singlepoint, ......Not nearly 8p/min peak BUT 1p total, no limit to length or time of call (use 18866). Brilliant. Thanks Martin. Unbelievable :):)

  • Do they feel no shame?

The Police are charging people, making money out of the Berkshire rail disaster, by using an 0870 number for anyone who needs to contact them:

"People worried about friends or relatives should call the Thames Valley Police casualty bureau number on 0870 010 0732"

The 0870 contact number for the rail crash is disgraceful! >:(

The 0870 rip off got a mention on BBC Radio 4's You and Yours programme today. Listen to it here.
