If you open a new bank account with another bank, and demand Natwest to close your account and take out your money from them - would that help your complaint? just wondering ...

I'm obviously relieved to have my account back but the stress I caused me is beyond explanation. It may sound extreme but I didn't eat properly for 2 of the 3 weeks, couldn't function properly at work as I could think of nothing else and this also affected my sleep. I will be going into the branch on Monday morning first thing. If I don't get a genuine apology and/or compensation I will be closing my account with them. Not that they'll care too much, I'm not a wealthy guy, but it'll make me feel better knowing they've lost my custom.

Besides closing your account with them I think you should do the following:

    1) Close your account.
    2) Bank elsewhere.
    3) Now that you have no bank account with them try to force everything you can for what they've done to you ...

I personally thanks to your advice would never open a bank account with Natwest. I use Halifax and Barclays and I'm happy with both.

When you say make sure they sort everything out, do you mean that they contact the originators to arrange to take payment again? If so wouldn't this be dangerous because if they didn't sort it ill have missed payments whereas I could just call on Monday and make the payments with my card?
I do mean that it's their duty now to sort everything out and to clean all the mess they created.
Your duty is to make sure that there is enough money in your account.

The question is if asking them to sort out the "mess" would give him anything.
I personally think switching bank accounts is the best thing for him to do ... this way he would not be tied to Natwest any longer.

Switching DDs takes a few minutes, it's not a big thing.

What I would do if I were him, is after getting my money out of Natwest is making sure they compensate me not only for the DD charges but also for all this time they kept me with no access to my funds ... I think that would be the best bet for him.

If Natwest needs to compensate him they can do so with a bank transfer or a cheque, he doesn't need to keep his account with them while a new "Investigation" takes place, and this time this "Investigation" would be on Natwest and not on him.

You are probably right, but if the late payments were reported to CRAs, for the OP it will be next to impossible to reverse this without Natwest intervention.
And even after transferring the DDs and the salary it makes sense to keep the account open until the complaint is resolved.

Do you have a local paper that might be interested in the story? Blackening their name with their antics always helps me feel a little better.

I'm looking forward to them giving you a reason for it, I find it outrageous the way the banks are allowed to treat people. Especially when part of the RBS group which took the massive bail out.

I think something drastic needs done with banking in this country, it's almost impossible to run without a bank account in this day and age.
