Of the list you mention, only O2 is potentially LLU. Plusnet and Zen run on the BT network, not sure about Tesco. LLU to a non-LLU service should not be an issue.

Found that Tesco is operated by Cable & Wireless LLU, where available: http://recombu.com/digital/providers/tesco/#tab_Broadband

  • Hi all,

I need help. I'm getting so stressed and confused with this it is actually making me feel ill.

I am currently a BT customer, getting their option 2 broadband (40gig / month) and landline. I've been with them for years and my contract with them expired ages ago...unbeknownst to me they then hiked the prices of that deal and as my direct debit went up I'd assumed it was just to cover call charges.

Anyhoo, I wasn't too happy when I realised and decided to take up talktalk on this deal. I spoke to BT first to see if they could get near the offer and they couldn't. They said I could leave any time with no notice and no charges incurred.

So, I applied online to talktalk, got a move date of 21st of this month (now 10 days away), all lovely and rosy.

Then someone from BT called to ask me why I was moving. He said that talktalk had a habit of not telling BT that they are transferring the broadband leaving customers paying both BT and talktalk at the same time and incurring a £30 disconnection charge. He advised me to call TT as soon as they had connected me to make sure they informed BT it had happened.

A day later I got a text from BT asking me to call them about cancellation fees. The woman I spoke to there advised that TT hadn't been in touch and that if they did not I would have to pay the £30 fee. She also noted that they needed 11-14 days notice of the transfer.

Apparently me telling BT about the transfer doesn't count.

I called TT to ask them to contact BT, got passed around from pillar to post and made little headway at all. Noone had a clue what I as talking about or who should be dealing with it - the best that they could come up with was "we do this all of the time and no-one has ever had to pay a cancellation fee, so don't worry". When I asked for a confirmation email I got given some fluff about them having to ask a manager to send it. I asked for it that day and here we are three days later none the wiser.

    So, here are my issues:

    1. My big worry is that I end up paying another month of broadband from BT plus a cancellation fee...£50.50 in total. If TT don't manage the transfer properly and I inform BT on the 21st March, presumably that will be the case.

    2. If I assume that TT are going to mess it up, and I personally give BT notice of termination now (rathert than transfer), presumably it will mean that I will pay the £30 regardless, even if TT manage to get it right?

    3. The guy from BT that advised me to contact talktalk after the line had gone live gave me advice that will absolutely have resulted in me paying the £50.50. I have asked for a complaint to be raised but haven't been contacted about that...will it happen automatically?

My big question is does anyone know of a way to get out of this paying the least? Even with the £30 charge, it still works out way cheaper with talktalk, but I only work part time and £30 is more than I earn in a day. If I have to pay broadband for an extra month too, it's half a weeks earnings for me.

Sorry for long post, have tried to include all relevant facts.

Use a MAC code (that you get from BT), give that to TT and you shouldn't incur a cease charge-otherwise you will have to pay it.
You've done this the wrong way around. the correct procedure is: get MAC code, sign up with new provider and give them the MAC. Once you have a switch date, contact BT and confirm the cancellation (they will usually contact you once TT have notified them anyway). Once you've received your final bill from TT, and the payment taken, cancel the DD.
I you are still within the cooling off period, I'd cancel TT and start again-and this time I'd do it online so that you get the cashback benefit.
NB: your BT contract has not 'expired'. Only your minimum term has. You are now on 14 days notice.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks Macman - any idea if TT will try to charge me for refunding the £114 paid up front for line rental, or will they refund in full?
