    Hi all,

I've managed to install tomtom on the phone and it runs fine. the one problem I am having is that because the lobster hasn't got a touch screen you have use the keypad to navigate tomtom, I haven't figured out which buttons do what via the keypad.

Also before you can install any software on the phone you need perform something called "application unlock" you only have to do this once.

Virgin when they shipped the phone, they setup the phone so that you can not install any software on it that is not "signed". Instructions on how to remove the application lock can be found here:

you need to be a member of the forum do download the required files.

    Regards

    Ayaaz

Thanks for the above. I've just followed the instructions and hopefully managed to remove the application lock. Got anything I can test it with? I've already got a Nokia 6680 running TomTom Mobile 5.2 and an N73 running TomTom Mobile 6, so don't need another phone running TomTom! Cheers in advance!

Does anyone know what's special about the earphones that come with it that make it an aerial where other earphones don't act as an aerial? And if so, what do I look out for in replacement earphones?

As I said in a previous post I bought this to use in my car with an FM transmitter. The transmitter has a 3.5mm plug, the lobster a 2.5mm plug. The Lobster also needs earphones plugged in to act as the aerial (i.e. it needs two things plugged into it, the transmitter and earphones).

So I bought a 2.5mm-->3.5mm adaptor and 3.5mm splitter from Maplins yesterday but any other earphones I tried gave it no signal. Only the original earphones, and some that came with my wife's phone gave a signal.

Any ideas where I can get replacement earphones (or just an aerial lead) with a 3.5mm plug that I can be sure will act as a DAB aerial?

BTW, as others have said the DAB reception is excellent, even on the move.

There is a small rubber plug next to the camera lens that allows you to connect an external antenna. It says it's for a car aerial in the manual but I am not familiar with the socket and am sure a standard car aerial will not fit.

Woah, good spot! I'll get off to Maplin at lunchtime and see if they do it, thanks! Will look better than the 14 adaptors connected together which is the way I'm heading at the moment!

This looks great - what's the tribal code it asks for on the link? I get it for £42.98 with delivery?

Tribe codes and cards are only given to Virgin Group employees.
The other poster shouldnt have posted the code on a public forum. If he is a employee - he should know the T&Cs !!

I wonder if you can use the free minutes abroad? Inclusive minutes on contract is usually a big fat NO, but this is PAYG. It'd be right handy for a week in Spain and then I could give the phone to one of my sister's kids afterwards![/QUOTE

    Free minutes doesnt include roaming.

At a guess i would think that socket on the back is only for the phone not for dab reception

What is so special about those earphones is that they have the aerial built into the wire. You can't just use the normal signal wires as the aerial as well because you're pumping sound down them.

Not entirely true, as any wire will act as an aerial, but the length of the wire is critical, especially at high frequency.i.e for TV reception. Sometimes capacitors are added to tune the wire ( to a frequency band) for better reception. That may be the case here.

It doesn't matter if other signals are on the wire, the receiver will block them, especially when they are hundreds of Mhz apart, as in this case.

I ordered a Lobster on t'internet a few days ago, using the 'Tribe' code and Quidco to save the most I could. Tonight I rang up to order a reconditioned one for my bloke and I got asked why I had used the staff discount (Tribe)code on my first order (EEEK!).
Apparently (according to the salesperson) the pattern of sales for this phone is very noticeable - what with this being a very popular site, sales of the Lobster have skyrocketed, as has the use of the Tribe code, as have 'phone calls to Virgin for reconditioned ones. Get in fast if you are dithering, because they may remove the Tribe code.

No, they havent removed the Tribe code, as thats for the use of those of us who are entitled to use it.
