It's very telling that they don't allow anyone to leave the site, and shut down everything else for their long sessions of conversion so no one can escape them.0

Birdie yes it's baptist I think.
I didn't even realise they did the speaking in tongues thing but you only need to watch Borat to see people fake that! I certainly wouldn't want my kid around that. And yes the sermons are often focused on things like no sex before marriage, homosexuality etc.
Maybe the younger ones might get different topics but even if she's not influenced she might just be bored silly.
Americanised is the right word because I'm pretty sure that branch of churches was developed in the US- the vineyard ones.
Oh yes they don't believe in sex before marriage.
In fact one of the daughters of someone we knew who went their got married at 16 SIXTEEN!!! - I'm sure it was just so they could have sex.
Crazy. Even her parents were mortified.0 -
Hi me again, I think the confusion in this lies in the term 'camp'. To my mind SS is not a camp, although you are camping, but more an event or retreat.
To the OP I think your DH may be ok with the camps that CPAS/PATHFINDER Ventures i think its called, a CoE organisation which does activity based camps.

Don't your parents have to give permission at 16? But yes plenty of them get married very young essentially so they can have sex.
It makes me laugh because I don't think they wait for marriage at all they just bring the wedding forward a few years!
The friend I had was friends with a girl in a group at her uni who got married in the 2nd year because I guess they couldn't wait til graduation & getting jobs etc before sleeping together and they're not 'allowed' to otherwise.
I just worry that some of these people's children will turn out to be gay & that child is going to have an extremely hard time.0 -

I don't think any parent would be scared of their child becoming christian if it were of their own free will, however, any parent should be scared of their child being pressured into becoming a christian due to a recruitment drive from an over-zealous group.
I'm sure you wouldn't be scared of your daughter becoming an atheist if that what she chose of her own free will and understanding and that is what she believed in her own heart but would be furious if she chose that path due to pressure from an atheist group.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Thanks again guys, I think looking into it, it is very different to the types of camps I remember my friends telling me about. I initially thought they were all the same, but this does seem an altogether different kettle of fish. It's a shame in some ways, because the youth group seems alright. My son goes to one for younger children which he loves "except for the boring bible bit!"
A few of my friends go to the church itself and they don't seem like that - apart from one who's expressed some odd opinions, but that's her choice I suppose. In fact just last week one of them was concerned that if they allowed gay marriage, that the next move would be polygymy - which i found quite amusing - makes for a funny discussion!
So, I think this time my oh is probably right. I do think though, if we explain our concerns to dd, she'll understand and won't feel like we're holding her back - I think if we can offer her an alternative then she should be happy enough. I'm sure if she realises quite what the week entails, it might put her off anyway.MSE Forum's favourite nutter :T0 -
If you just show her the videos on the website and ask her does she want to sit through a week of that I doubt she would say yes!
The comment your friend said about the marriages thing is a prime example of their thinking and the things they say to try to persuade people to their way of thinking by scare mongering. It's like something out of the backward Bible Belt.
I wonder what they'll do now gay people can get married & the world hasn't ended.0 -
I've been to soul survivor lots of times, from when I was about 14 to 18ish I went every year. Then I went again when I was about 22. (I'm 34 now, if anyone's interested lol)
I loved it, always had a great time and made lots of new friends. The only thing that would put me off now would be the camping! I'd go to spring harvest now - they have chalets
ETA: fwiw, I'm all in favour of gay marriage, I'm divorced, and I live with my partner (not married).0 -

Bizarrely, it's really odd when they come out with these things. It's only when they do that I realise their viewpoints in life are completely different to mine. Discussions on someone visiting a psychic when her sister had died, being gay, halloween (that's a sore point) and other things which all lead to the devil apparently. One complaint was that someone's son had been sent home with a reading book about a witch.
In fact the funniest one was when there was a school trip to the local Buddhist centre. My oh had gone as a helper - 2 paranoid mum's went along to watch their children and make sure they didn't take part in the meditation. My oh said as they started to meditate, an embarrassing scene errupted while the two children were told to "stop that this instant!" then my oh got a bottom in his face as one of the mum's bent over to stop her child from meditating!
Actually there are quite a lot of incidents now I come to think of it....
I have to admit, it might be all shiny and modern with young bands etc, but yes it does seem incredibly backwards. A wolf in sheeps clothing perhaps.MSE Forum's favourite nutter :T0 -
If he's worried about brainwashing, she's far more likely to fall in with their views after prolonged and repeated 1 hour exposures, going back with questions, greeting them in the street, recognising them and their ideologies over and over again, than one week with them.0
