It is because the simple substituting of the word dosh with the much less contentious word benefits takes the venom out of the title while fundamentally nothing changes, that I supported the suggestion

I honestly don't see that there is any venom associated with the word 'Dosh' in the title and do not share the opinion that it must be changed.

Of course, if the powers that be, feel that it should be, then fair enough - it is not something I will lose sleep over. I just fail to see where this venom is.
Dear Lord, I am calling upon you today for your divine guidance and help. I am in crisis and need a supporting hand to keep me on the right and just path. My mind is troubled but I will strive to keep it set on you, as your infinite wisdom will show me the way to a just and right resolution. Amen.

I didn't say the word 'dosh' was venom-ous. I said "the county's psyche now associates the word dosh with scroungers, cheats, lazy, the undeserving of help and benefits. The word has not changed, its the media's manipulation of the the word that has brought the country to the point where the tribes are at war with each other. Not only the written on forums and other social media, but the physical, as in pensioner bashing and disabled bashing. That it happens now with regular frequency is venomous, its precisely that poison running through the veins of society that infects a particular section of the population while simultaneously making the word 'dosh' attractive as a conveniently easy to deliberately and conveniently misunderstand and follow the 'red tops' quest to express their prejudice and hate.

Because this [past tense] has happened and is a fact of everyday life we need to move with the times, accept what is fact, and in this case make it less rather than more likely that benefit bashers, disabled bashers, mental health bashers and unemployed bashers are able to create an account and vent their bile here in Martins forums. Now the fact that you "don't see that there is any venom associated with the word 'Dosh' in the title and do not share the opinion that it must be changed" is fine with me, I have no problem whatsoever with your view or your freedom of speech, but then both you and I are moderate, even handed, rational people. Unfortunately on this particular part of the forum trolls & bashers [Andy & Flo et al] are frequent visitors and many many vulnerable individuals have in the past been tortured by them.

I agree with you, I can't see anythe connection between a silly immature outdated slang word and venom. Dosh is a fairly pathetic attempt to 'get down with the kidz', except the kids would laugh their socks off at the use of a word that went out with the Ark.
Disability and Finances would make a better fit.

Again, I disagree. I believe it is the word 'benefits' that has people associating certain things with those who claim them, not the word 'Dosh'.

However, Andy & Flo in his many forms, and others like him will still come to the board, irrespective of what it is called because that is the sort of people they are.

By placing all the problems one faces on one particular word empowers that word when those who are against those claiming benefits may not have even associated the word dosh with benefit hatred.

Indeed, apart from a few opinions on here, is there actually any eveidence that the word dosh is associated with benefit hatred?

What would raise a red flag more to those who wish to - in your words 'bash others' - disability and benefits or disability and dosh?

Anything associated with benefits at the moment can be seen in the negative. Add disability to the equation and I, personally, feel that that would be worse.

As it stands, people are able to give short shrift to those who come on here in the negative or, as often is the case, they entertain and feed rather than ignore, but that is down to each individual to decide.

If the name is changed, I have no issue. Likewise, if it remains the same, I have no issue, I just cannot see why one particular word has all this negative power that it is being given.

  • "entertain and feed rather than ignore" - this I agree with, always the same two individuals, working from memory and without searching for evidence to support what I'm about to say, its always the same primary single individual.

As to the original question raised, we disagree on how the search engines work both global dot net and local internal within the forums, I continue to asset that 'dosh' is an appropriate word that brings to this place many inappropriate people for inappropriate reasons who behave in an inappropriate way. Regarding this interaction between you and I, that's the beauty of a forum, reasonable people can and do disagree .. .. its the wholly un-reasonable eejits and trolls that cause the problems not the likes of you and I.

For now however I've had my say on this subject, I'm sure ebsay's reasons for both the question and the poll were entirely honourable and well expressed in #5 the intended result poll will bubble its own way to a conclusion, currently 13 for YES and 17 for NO, regardless of the poll's outcome nothing whatsoever will result, no change would be made if it was 90% in favour of change.

It is a shame that more discussion cannot be conducted civilly and people recognise that whilst they may disagree on one thread, they could be in agreement on another but hey ho, I have also been guilty of this so can see how easy it happens.

I have no issue with the question raised and the poster is entitled to raise it. It's always good to discover the opinions of others.

With regards there being no change, even if 90% wanted such a change, you could well be mistaken there. My recent experience of this was on the competition board where management introduced a new tool that over 90% did not like. Management listened and removed. It took people power but was successful.

Powers that be do listen and would, if there was such a huge response, take views on board. That's not to say they simply bow under pressure over any issue, rather that they at least listen and make the decision that's best for the board.

  • Isn't "dosh" just slang for "money"? But fits better with the title due to the alliteration of the "d"?

    Other boards could be:

    Mobiles and Money?
    Cars and Cash?
    Whiners' Wonga?
I didn't say the word 'dosh' was venom-ous. I said "the county's psyche now associates the word dosh with scroungers, cheats, lazy, the undeserving of help and benefits

Seems a random load of tweets from some large names would disagree with you...

I remember when this board was set up and named. There was a vote and a number of us voted for 'dosh and disability' - only because it sounded like hearted and catchy. There was no derogatory intent behind this.

But then MSE towers decided that the purpose (disability) had to come first so it was re-named Disability and Dosh (which I admit I have never particularly liked). Personally I would not go for Disability and Benefits, as this gives a very restrictive impression of what the board is about.

If the name were to be changed, wouldn't Disability Moneysaving be sufficient?
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.
  • I can't see any problem with the name. This is MSE, a site about money saving; dosh = money ...

But we did get rid of the "Silver Surfers" nonemclature after a long, hard struggle.;), and tagging moneysavers as 'mad', 'maniac' etc.

I quite liked the Silver Surfers and didn't want it to change. :)

As for this board, how about plain old Moneysaving and Disability.
