There is a facebook group set up that has lots of advice and files to copy and send to your MP etc, to try and get the government to do a U-turn on this stupid idea.

Her boyfriend who is Australian is paying for her plane ticket. She will have to pay him back at some point.0 -

You don't have to explain anything to anyone on here x0 -
The thing is, there is probably as much chance of her not coming back then doing so, so it wouldn't really be fair that this room should be paid and kept for her.0

Would you be able to cope with someone staying for short periods?
There are exchange students looking for hosts around here every year so it would only be for one or two weeks at a time.0 -
With commuting costs going up, there's also more people looking to stay near work during the week.
I used to stay Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs night as a lodger near work and travel home for the weekends. I'm sure I was a very easy source of income for my landlady.0 -

That would prob only cause more confusion with housing benefit. It would probably end up costing me more because my housing benefit would still change.
I guess I'm just going to have to find the extra amount.
Thanks everyone for your advise.0 -

That is the government's overall tactic. There are not enough suitable properties for affected housing benefit claimants to rehouse themselves, so the government are relying on tenants to stay put and absorb the cost themselves. It doesn't matter whether or not this results in tenants suffering financial hardship.0 -

It's a shame though that so many people can't find that money. They are going to go into arrears as soon as the new charge is added. There are not enough properties to move into, so what are these people supposed to do? They'll end up evicted and homeless as they can't pay, and then what?0 -
It isnt a charge that is added. It is a reduction of HB.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
