Default flight delay with tech problem + snow
i had flight booked with emirates on thursday 29th jan.arrived at 6am checked in told was running a hour late but would make up time for my connection.then was annouced there was a techincal problem and further info would be provided at 10am this was around 8am.
by 9am the airport had closed due to snow.then at 10am the airline handed out meal vouchers for £10 which i collected and used.by the time i collected them the board had been update to 11am more info would be provided then it changed to 12pm.by then they said was able to board at 12.45pm for a 13hr take off.
board plane at 12.30pm round 1pm they shuts doors and deicing would start soon to get us away asap.about hr half hour later they had doen the right side of the plane and was told by the captian they start the left side within 5 mins.i sat finally got a couple of drinks after they missed me 4 times and looked out for the deicing truck.for a hour and half nothing was done oon the left side of the plane.by which time one passanger had a panick attack and breathing problem and was taken off the plane.
after 4 hrs the captian they finally start the left side of the plane deicing.but had 34 mins to which do it and push us back other wise we would have to disembark the plane as the crews hours would be up soon.at 5pm was was finally pushed back with about 10 mins to spare and took off from manchester at 5.15pm.
arrived in dubai at 3.40am came off the plane thinking a few hrs wait and ill be on plane to bangkok.no all bangkok passangers where took to one side and hand boarding passes and hotel accomdation.mine was a 24 hr delay with a hotel provided with free meals and drinks at meal times only.any else u had o pay for.i requested my luggage when i got to the emirates hotel.they say it would be with me when i woke up.
i woke round dinner went down had a meal went to reception to see if my bag had arrived.was told i had to go back to airport as there was a problem.did that spent hout half between left luggage and customs looking for my bag to finally be told it was at the hotel.left the hotel at midnight with a few others i got speaking to who was also not happy about having to stop over for 24hrs.i finally arrived in bangkok a day and half late and took me a further 2 hrs to get to pattaya.
i also contact the taxi firm to cancel my original booking for 30th jan at 7.30am.and lost 2 days i payed for at my hotel which is not refunded to me.
id like to know can i claim on my holiday insurance and the against the airline aswell.as i have never had to claim for somethign like just a new case which the airline payed straight ut for.
Hi Thunder367,
It looks like there were a few problems that contributed to your delay.
This is a post, from another site, from a fellow passenger.
I was on the EK22 yesterday and it took 3 hours to de ice the aircraft. Then we had a medical emergency onboard probably due to the cabin temperature being extremely warm. Captain could not turn on air-conditioning due to ongoing deicing. The crew had 15 minutes left before they would of had to call it day when we finally got a push back. We sat on that aircraft for over 4 hours before we finally departed. Overall an 8 hour delay. Pesky snow…
This is a post from the captain of another aircraft.
We witnessed the plight of the Emirates 777, which seemed to be being de-iced by only one truck and listened to the exasperated voice of the Captain reporting that it had taken them ONE AND A HALF HOURS to de-ice ONE wing!!! Indeed a few stands away, it took them over an hour to de-ice an A320.
We watched as the Emirates A380 waited on the taxiway, engines running for over an hour waiting for the 777 to vacate the stand. How much fuel that wasted only the 380 crew know.
There are some photo's of your aircraft being de iced taken from the control tower.

With so many problems all contributing to your delay I think any claim would be very difficult and I don't hold out much chance for you.
Firstly you need to read Vaubans superb guide to get the background on claims.
Secondly, I think you should write to Emirates and see what they have to say about the events that led to your delay and then take it from there.
Thirdly, contact your insurance company as you may well be able to claim from them.
Good luck. Please read Vaubans superb guide. To find it Google and then download 'vaubans guide'.0 -
Essentially, most if not all UK airports are ill prepared for snow AND the volume of traffic expecting to use the airport.
It does snow in the UK, annually, almost without fail, so why don't airports have enough of the correct equipment for deicing and runway clearance? If you're new. read The FAQ and Vauban's Guide

Hi Guys,
I am looking to put a claim to fly emirates for a delayed flight. However, I am not able to get any contact details on their page. Can someone pass this to me please?
Thanks,0 -

Hi all, I have downloaded Vauban's guide and was fairly sure I would be entitled to compensation, however after reading through the forums, there seems to be a bit of disagreement on a couple of points and I wondered if someone could clarify?
I booked an Etihad flight from Manchester to Bangkok last month with a connection in Abu Dhabi. We arrived in Abu Dhabi on time and were even given a gate number for our connecting flight as we left the plane. However, on arrival in the terminal, the flight was shown as having a 7 hour delay. In fact, by the time it left, it was 10 hours late. Information from Etihad staff was sketchy and conflicting and we never got a straight answer about the reason for the delay. We arrived almost 10 hours late in Bangkok and so lost out on a night in the hotel we had booked.
My question is - can I claim because the section of my flight which was delayed did not involve an EU airport?
And, if I do claim, do I need to submit the complaint form on Etihad's website first or just go straight to them with the template claim letter? Also, can I claim additionally for the cost of the hotel?
Thanks in advance.0 -
there is mixed opinion on this I believe and not sure if it has been tested in court
Your delay was fully outside the EU on a non-EU airline so I would expect the airline to reject any claim. I am not aware of any NWNF that will take these cases and I guess it will be more complex to take it to court yourself
What time did you arrive at the hotel? Unless you were due to arrive @ 2am and did not get there until 2pm (usual check in time for hotels) you would have needed to pay for the room anyway. eg if you turn up at 6am they can tell you to go away and come back later unless you had a room booked for the previous night
If you did not go to that hotel you would probably be best to speak to your travel insurer as airlines will not cover consequential losses0 -
Thanks Caz for the advice, I'm sure I read on here somewhere (can't find it now, typically!) that because I bought a ticket out of the EU and was 10 hours late to my final destination, this was covered by the regulations regardless of connections. In terms of the hotel, we had booked in advance and should have arrived around 8pm, but didn't actually get there until 7am the following morning so we lost out completely on the first night - insurance company advised me to approach the airline first!
If anyone else has any input, I'd appreciate it before I start arguing my case with Etihad - they ruined the start of a long awaited holiday and I'm determined to try and get some redress, but want to be as well-informed as possible before I start!

Flight AV121 seems to be problematic, anybody pursuing a claim against AV?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0
