So, would we be entitled to compensation for this?

This is a self-help forum and there are lots of useful resources including a thread "Please post in the correct airline thread" which is designed to provide a pointer to the appropriate thread and to keep the board usable by discouraging every poster from creating a new thread for their flight.

Bit confused about this but bur my query is In Dec 2013 the mrs an I flew from MANC airport with Emirates to Dubai, to connect to Sydney. The connection was meant to be almost immediate (about 1 hr 15 mins).

On arrival, which was about 20 mins late, with no explanation why, they herded us up, and took all Sydney bound peeps to a desk. ( We expected to be rushed through customs etc to meet our Sydney connection at this point..)

The Emirates desk girl explained we aren't going to Sydney now, but Perth instead (?) and its leaving in about 9/10 hours !

They told us then to go through customs an wait for a mini bus to take everyone (lots of confused tired people) to a hotel & come back later for the Perth departure. Incidentally no one told us of any delay, or why this was going on, or even offered us food or a drink of water in 42 degree heat!

Have since checked that flight stats page, an our flight did goto Sydeny, so no idea why everyone bound for it, got pushed onto another. In all we arrived in Sydney via Perth a total of 13 hrs 36 mins late after original schedule An we never had any apology or explanation off Emirates.

Incidentally we lost 1 night of accommodation in Sydney which i had already paid for. Can I get this back off some one, and are we entitled to claim anything here?
Thanks in advance to any replies.

How did you get from Perth to Sydney?
I expect (guess), given it was December, the flights were probably overbooked and they took advantage of your inbound delay to state you would get to the Sydney flight too late so were being proactive in rerouting to 'help' you.

Whether compensation is due will depend on the reason for the delay of the Manchester flight. EU comp for denied boarding would not be applicable as the affected flight was outside the EU but you may be able to claim delay compensation based on the ex-EU flight from Manchester being the one that ultimately caused your delay to Sydney

Emirates booked us on a Qantas flight from Perth to Sydney for the following day.
Previously the MAN flight took off only 8mins late but arrived 41mins late in DUBai.
Bit gutted if it means arriving over 13 hours late at our destination an losing a nights accomadation has all been for nothing :\ Not to mention the stress it casued in Dubai airport :wall::wall:
  • Hello everyone, I am new to this so please be patient. I am looking for a bit of advice on whether I am right in claiming compensation. This is my story:
Our flight with United Airlines was due to take off from London heathrow at 8:00am on 30th june 2009 going to Chicago O'Hare. Now the flight took off spot on time, however around 2 hours into the flight a fault developed in one of the engines and was turned around and landed back at heathrow a further 2 hours later. United airlines to be fair were good and seemed to have a decent procedure for these kind of events and put us all up in a hotel for the night until the could find up another flight the next day, and as promised we were put on a flight that departed at 8:03am on the 1st of july 2009.
Now while united were very good to us, we did miss the first day of our holiday as we were delayed 24 hours arriving at our destination.
I have looked on the flight data website linked with moneysavingexpert and this shows the flight as taking off on time but has an unknown status.
Im sorry this has been long winded but if anyone could offer advice it would be much appreciated.
    Thankyou very much,
    Philly7445

Hi Philly welcome to MSE, first thing is to have a good read of the FAQs in post #2 on page 1 of this thread.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • Hello again and thank you for your super quick responses. I cant find any examples of my predicament in the faq's I have studied them over several days. (not for that length of time I do have other things to do.) I suppose my question is do I claim for delayed as I arrived 24 hours late, or for cancelled flight as I didn't actually arrive on the flight I was supposed to. Or does it not really matter?

After the Sturgeon case, the law doesn't distinguish between cancellations and delays of three hours or more. A delay of 24 hours could still be regarded as a delay, rather than a cancellation however - keeping the same flight number is often a good indicator.
