Why Is There Not Much Help For Binge Eating Disorder (and if there is, where is it?)

Anyone who is substantially reducing or eliminating grains, beans and lentils please ensure you eat plenty of nuts and seeds for the minerals and fibre. A couple of tablespoons is unlikely to cut the mustard, depending which nuts and seeds you choose and how much green veg and dairy you eat you may need hundreds of grams to replace starchy whole carbs. Remember that processed meats and cheese are packed with salt and often additives, have in moderation only.
Rather than processed meats try relying much more heavily on fish, seafood, organ meats and organic or omega enriched eggs. I think we have a tendency to associate hunter-gatherer or traditional diets with muscle meat and veggies but in fact there is nothing in land animal meat that is not available elsewhere in the diet, whereas the only sensible source of the essential fatty acids long chain omega-3s is oily fish. The 'out of Africa' maps are interesting too: humans hugged the coastlines for much of our journey around the globe, leaving mollusc shell middens at some ancient sites.
Thanks again! I'm not a meat lover although I can stomach some, but i have to inspect it to death (or trim it until there's hardly any left!).
 I do love fish though!0

I have been reading Running Made Easy after being recommended it to give me some info and motivation.
In it, it has food tips but recommends quite a lot of carby things (including white bread) which has me confused. Should I follow the 'runners' diet style and go carby on the days I run?
Sorry again! This is why I end up confused!!0

Hi Daisy (i hope its ok to shorten your name like this?),
BED has only recently been recognised as a 'proper' Eating Disorder in the DSM, but in reality the sufferers have known for a while that it's just as real as other EDs such as Anorexia and Bulimia.
I havent read through all of the thread, so please forgive me if i am repeating anything.
Have you looked at the 'B_eat' website? It provides support for people with ALL types of EDs, as well as those with EDNOS and BED. There are online forums, as well as real life support groups in some areas (none near me at all unfortunately!). The link is here: http://www.b-eat.co.uk/
I think your GPs reaction was wrong wrong wrong on SO many levels, i can't even begin to express my frustration! Unfortunately, the NHS in general only seems to take an Eating Disorder seriously if the sufferer is severely Anorexic and very emaciated, which means that the majority of ED sufferers have to push for help.
 i hope that helps 0 0

AARRGGHH...i have just had a brief glance at the other answers that you have received and wish i hadnt!
How can people be so..so....aaarrgghh, i cant even work out where to begin.
Telling someone with BED to 'just eat less' is the most rubbish answer EVER. It's like telling an anorexic to 'just start eating', or a drinker to 'just stop drinking'.
I am incredibly angry on your behalf.
Please DONT go on a diet, whether thats with WW, SW, or ANY other diet. Diet are EVIL for people with EDs. What you NEED is Psychotherapy to get t the deep rooted issues that leadyou to binge eat in the first place.
Sending you lots of support (((DAISY))).0

Thanks for replying and thanks for the support. On the whole this thread has been amazing. I really appreciate all of the help that people have offered and am grateful that people have shared their experiences. This helps me to feel like I'm not alone. There have only been a couple of unhelpful responses. Also judging by the amount of responses makes me realise that it's probably more common than i thought.
I know that my diet as it is probably does me no favours and that if I was nourishing it properly, I may not get the cravings and urges as much.
I haven't completed the plan I am aiming to make but I am going to give running a try. I have decided too that I am going to ask my GP for a referral at least for CBT. I had thought about paying privately because the sessions on the nhs are limited to 6, however I'm not sure I can afford it.
I just checked out the b:eat website and there are no groups near me :-(. Maybe I should set on up lol! And go on my own!!
Like I have said before, I am NOT making excuses, I HAVE attempted to help myself. I just haven't yet done it successfully. That's why I'm here asking for advice and tips.0

You beat me to it WantToBeSE.
It's nothing to do with the food!!!! You have to tackle to psychological reasons for using food to cope. If diets worked there wouldn't be a problem with obesity.
My friend is a bulimic and when she saw her GP her referred her for counselling which never mentioned food. She looked at her family dynamics.
Bingeing on food to cope is a common problem, but people do not talk about it.
Whilst not at the extremes I have struggled with food issues since I was 9. Have tried lots of things like hypnotherapy, overeaters anonymous, counselling etc. The thing that works for me is the Beyond Chocolate forum and it's only £20 a year. It is a closed forum where like minded people discuss sensitive issues surrounding food and is very very supportive. There are 2 books Beyond Chocolate and Beyond Temptation by Sophie and Audrey Boss.
I have been a member for 3 years and visit every day. Once a user of food to cope always one and it will always be the default when things get tough.
 Take Care.0

Sorry if my last post came across as a bit pushy..as you can probably tell i am really passionate about this subject matter
I hope no offense was taken?
Private psychotherapy can be cheaper than advertised. when i went looking for a therapist i was looking at about £40 a hour, which i could NEVER afford!
But then i called around and asked if they charged on a sliding scale, which some of them did. That's how i found my therapist. She rocks
Good luck with the running, i keep on thinking about doing the C25K, but keep putting it off! When i was in my anorexic and bulimia phases i had problems with overexercising, so feel a bit unsure of the exercise thing for me. But i'd like to think i could one day!0

Gosh no, you didn't come across as pushy!
The last part of that post was just reiterating what I have already tried to do in case anyone (not you) thinks I'm making excuses again!!
Thanks again. I know what you mean about exercise - when I do it i get really competitive with myself and although (I think) I built up gradually last time I joined the gym, I was obviously doing too much.0
