i use the top BB but im not hugely impressed of late as it seems to suffer some slow down regardless of times/managment
Have you followed the advice on this page
    http://www.virginmedia.com/help/20mb-broadband-optimisation.php
  • I am on the 20meg service . As of yet I have never been throttled , and I download a lot . I just do it out of peak hours .
As for all the doomsayers talking about VM "overselling" bandwidth , I very rarely get less than 15meg (and thats at peak time) , most BB problems are usually to do with the PC and NOT the network .

It's really luck of the draw if your segment is oversold or not, for example my street has about 15 Virgin users on it, and you can tell at peak time when speeds drop below 8k/sec on a download, and i'm on 4mpbs.

    [edit]

Also, just did a quick calculation, did you know that downloading at full speed on a 2mbps/M connection, it'll take around 23 minutes to hit the 350mb quota.

If you don't have traffic shaping you will have caps.

    Hot Diggy Dog, that's fast.

This is looking really bad for us on low speeds. I am on 2mb at the minute so this means if I download and episode of Heroes which is 350mb usually, they will start to restrict my traffic. The only problem is I have VoIP which uses upto 100kbps up and down so if my up speed is lowered to 128kbps as stated by Virgin, my VoIP may cease to work. This happened to me last night, (even though I am not a big downloader, I only download about 2-4GB/month), my voip service would not ring for 5-30 seconds after the number would be dialled. Sometimes it would not dial even after this time. FOR ME THIS IS SERIOUS as I am hoping to get rid of the Virgin/Telewest phone line.

    Hi Saeed,
A standard pcm (G.711) line operates at 64kbps, voip will operate at lower bandwidths about 24kbps should suffice for a single voice path.

Try this calc for determining bandwidth to voice path requirement.

    Hope this helps...

By the way I worked for what are now Virgin media for years but luckily got out a while back, if they throttle my bandwidth any more I may as well go back to dial up..bunch of muppets !!

Anyone that thinks 350mb is high obviously doesn't need a broadband connection and should move back to dial-up. Leave bb for people that need (and pay for) the bandwidth.

sponge 350mb is not high put if your on 2mbs that more than most on adsl will ever get and there caps and that are worse than been throttled to 1mbs, one more thing you can still download the the net on 1mbs like most of us did a few years ago

    Virgin rapped on broadband speeds
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7483675.stm

A complaint lodged by BT about the speeds of Virgin Media's broadband service has been upheld by the Advertising Standards Authority.

The challenge centred around its advertisement "Hate to Wait?", which ran in the national media and featured download times for songs and TV shows.

BT argued that Virgin's usage caps meant that downloads during peak times would be slower than advertised.

The ASA has agreed and ordered Virgin to make it clear that speeds will vary.

"ISPs are responding to the growth of online video services and capping is also a way of migrating customers onto faster and more expensive tariffs," said James Garlick, analyst with Screen Digest.

"There are lots of factors which affect speed. Consumers are concerned about it but often it is competitors keeping an eye on each other," said a spokesman from the ASA.

  • If you buy a car that is said you can do 100mph unlimited but after 3 days of use its restricted because other users cant achieve 100mph because the road is not wide enough who's fault is it ?
Well its not mine ! same with broadband
if virgin media cant supply a service that they offer then they should not be offering it so what if its not fair for those who use the internet less then others to be held up, They should contact the supplier of broadband and find out why if every one in the street want 20MB broadband and want to download all day long why they cant ! i tell you because your all being miss sold products ! don't blame people who down load more than others ! its not unfair its what they pay for !!!
ANy one who disagrees with this is obvious stupid, Just like the rest who get walked over and just moan ! i quit virgin broadband :wave:and joined sky no problems now and still a good 10mb speed all-day long..
