Bought a Ex hire car without knowing?
Comments

The V5 stated ERAUK ... not Enterprise Rent a Car UK.
The OP is not a dealer, he is not expected to know that.
On the other hand the dealer is a dealer and is expected to know that and has a duty to point out ALL relevant facts about the cars history.

The question is if being an ex rental is 'relevant'.0 -

But we all want to know why if it was ex rental did the car have 40,000 miles on when Steph bought it? I still think there was another owner before Steph...0 -

I have found the V5 it says 1 owner on it as ERAC Aldershot. I will give ERAC a call today to see if they have any record of what the car was used for.
Harvey: I got rid of the Eos in 2009 and had a Jeep for a long while but I'm still having no luck with cars lol.
Thanks Steve as you correctly pointed out I'm not a dealer so how would I know what ERAC UK means
Still not heard anything about the car but will update later as no doubt I will be hearing about it
Many Thanks

If you had just bought it, you would have a clear cut case. Presumably you would have made a different, "buying decision" if the cars previous owner and likliehood of it being a commercial day-hire or lease car had been clearly expressed to you. The dealer broke the law, "by ommission" in that case.
However, so far down the line with the high attrition rate in salespeople and the lack of evidence you will have; you only have the "he said, she said" from your own memory to fall back on. Get them to fix up what you need doing, but forget any other recompense. At least it wasn't from ACs own, vast hire fleet.
You might also like to look up for future reference, as said before, arnoldsucks, Provincial Securities Ltd and good old ERAC UK Ltd.0 -
What's wrong with it being an ex hire car? The hire companies generally only keep them for 6 months and they never put more than 10,000 miles on them. I wouldn't have an issue with this.0

Most keep them for 2 years and/or 40k. The ones that I have had that are nearing this limit are generally pretty beaten up. Its amazing what people do to a car that isnt 'theirs'.
You're the first person who's said this. If it's true, and it obviously is, then it casts a different light on the subject.0 -
Only tuppenny ha'penny, small time businesses keep their cars for big miles and for that long. The big boys, depending on make and model, tend to dispose of, at maximum, 9 months and 15,000 miles to still convey the "managers car" or "demo model" rubbish, while still attracting near-new price.0

Mechanically they are fine but they pick up a lot of cosmetic damage - people not knowing where the ends of the car are, curbing the wheels, running into stuff, etc. I had one with a massive tear in the rear bumper where someone had previously caught it on something and another that had clearly been side-swiped.
The rental company charges the renter for the damage but never actually gets it fixed because they know that in a few weeks time its going to look like it was before.
The money they claim from the renter to cover the damage is used to offset reduction in value they get when they are put through the auction after they are off lease. The dealer/individual who buys it from the auction generally gets a SMART repair guy to come along sort out all the damage before it is sold on.
Other rental agencies might have different retention periods.0
