- why do you consider it rude :
- if a company who don't do "QUOTES FOR NEW BOILERS"
- and are not part of "THE GREEN DEAL"
- tell you they are not part of the 'Green deal' and don't do quotes new boilers ?
- they don't do Tikka Masala or sell wallpaper eitherDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem. You only need a new boiler if the current one does not work. Whilst a new condensing boiler may be more energy efficient, it may not be cost effective to change (depends on efficiency of current boiler and the area to be heated).
An energy assessor has no reason to advise that radiators be changed!!!
If you are able to, wait until one of the DIY outlets has a special on loft insulation, and do it yourself. Twelve inches (30 cms) will provide a good level of insulation; just keep the eaves clear.0 -

Scottish Power, British Gas? What are you thinking?
By all means get three quotes but get them from any of the big energy suppliers and you are going to be comparing one inflated over the top price with another.
Pick up your yellow pages and get a quote from a couple of local gas safe plumbers and you will get a much better deal. See if your local newspaper has a web page covering local supplier recommendation and review.
I'd bet you will find a local plumber offering a deal that will save you hundreds if not a thousand over an offer from one of the big outfits.
That's how it went for me anyway, new boiler this year.
New gas combi boiler, straight swap for an older one. British gas £2500, local plumber £1400 plus price of a programmer and a wireless room thermostat. Exactly the same boiler, and the same guarantee.0 -
Unless there is zero profit involved in the EPC and work involved then this will fall flat.
There should be no link between the epc assessor and the company doing the work as all thats going to happen is the numbers will be tweaked.
No intrest on the loan and no early penalty for paying of early.
I have yet to see anything that can show any benefit in this.
EPC assessors (DEA's) don't do Green Deal. I know I am one. They only provide energy performance certificates as required by law if you are selling or letting a property. An EPC is also required as part of your application for the feed in tariff should you have Solar PV installed.
I think you are talking about Green Deal Advisors. They also as part of what they do produce an EPC but that's in support of a Green Deal arrangement.
I have no intention of becoming a GDA because I, as a DEA, sell nothing and I have no intentions to become a sales person for any efficiency upgrade installer, as will be the case along with all the mis-selling some might be tempted into in order to secure commission on those sales.
Other than that if you substitute Green Deal Adviser for EPC assessor I completely agree with every word.
Just don't want us DEA's getting the blaim for this Green Deal dogs dinner of a scheme.0 -
Have the rules surrounding prepayment meters and Green Deal changed recently? I was under the impression pre-payment meters didn't work with Green Deal as there was no guarantee of a regular payment being made.0

As anyone who has had an EPC done knows they are wildly inaccurate.
I'm a heating eng and just struggled to keep a straight face!
So the idea of shelling out thousands on the basis of this kind of guestimate is farcicle.
First up the whole thing is a gift to big business. Its so bureaucratic specifically to keep your honest small businesses ot of the picture.
Its well known that BG are not competitive, I'm only too glad for a customer to get a quote from them to make me look cheap!
So you can be assured that the select band of greeen dealers will be roughly twice the price of a local company.
But hey who cares its on the never never so you don't notice.
You could have a new boiler installed professionally for £1500, and put it on you mortgage at 5% is if nec. Or you could pay £3000+ and pay 10% compound interest for 15 plus years, potentially after the boiler has died - that £270 cashback is not looking so tempting now is it?
Worse still the accuracy of data for many contruction types in the models is highly questionable, meaning they may well seriously underestimate you houses current performance. This of course means you savings will be overestimated, and as I suspect a tendancy to inflate the price of measures to match the 'predicted' savings you can see the problem.
To cap it all your house will be saddled with a debt for overpriced underperforming measures that could be almost at there expiry date when you come to sell.
Bring back £150 cavity wall insulation from your energy provider.
Take my advice, speak to a local Heating engineer maximise you saving and minimise your cost and give the Green steal a wide birth.
I'm frankly quite surprised MSE is not more sceptical of this!0 -
Try Mark Group (used to be called Mark Insulation).jay.driscoll wrote: »Good Afternoon,
Has anyone looked at booking an assessment? If so the cost seems quite high. Has anyone come across any providers offering free no catch assessments?

I humbly suggest some of your figures are wrong : typical PV is no more than 3Kw (hard to get more on a typical roof) and could be about £6000 now (prices dropped). You missed off the main benefit alongside grid export payment and saving on the electric bill, which is you get paid for EVERY Kw/h you generate, at 16p per Kw/h.
If a green deal package with solar doesn't add up, drop the solar. On the other hand, a house with no loft or cavity wall insulation will have a relatively quick payback, so these can be bundled together with solar and the whole package could add up. Some say the interest rate is low when you consider it's 'unsecured'.Hello :j
Let’s assume a householder needs all these energy saving products and services. So not including any tariff incentives etc and assuming existing property was heated by oil.
Example 1.
Cost Savings
Solid Wall Insulation 3 bed semi £12500 £475 From EST. per year
Loft Insulation 170mm top up £350 £25 From EST. per year
Solar PV Panels 16KW £12000 £88 Money saved on bill EST
£77 Money on grid export EST
Total Cost: £24850 £665 A YEAR
If interest rate is 7.67% over 25 years the householder will have to pay back
That is:
Monthly: £183
Total Interest Paid £29821
Total pay back £54671
So the householder would gain £665 a year (£55.42 month) at present bill rate per year but have to pay £183 per month at interest rate 7.67%
This would not fit under golden rule and could not be financed under green deal. Unless the householder was allowed to contribute money towards the cost or the interest rate was dropped or cost of equipment was lower.
Example 2:
Same size house gas and with out Solid Wall Insulation but has cavity walls filled.
Cost Savings
Loft Insulation 170mm top up £350 £25 From EST. per year
Solar PV Panels 16KW £12000 £88 Money saved on bill EST
£77 Money on grid export EST
Total Cost: £12350 £190 A YEAR
If interest rate is 7.67% over 25 years the householder will have to pay back
That is:
Monthly: £91
Total Interest Paid £14821
Total pay back £27171
So the householder would gain £190 a year (£15.83 month) at present bill rate per year but have to pay £91 per month at interest rate 7.67%
This would not fit under golden rule and could not be financed under green deal. Unless the householder was allowed to contribute money towards the cost or the interest rate was dropped or cost of equipment was lower.
Key Facts from Bank of England

Next due:

Current Inflation

The interest rate from building societies for your savings of £12 000 is 2% to 2.5%. So you could assume that the lending rate for the green deal loan could be brought down to a lower figure if it was truly non profit making.
Would be glad to see someone’s realist equations that do work.
Thank you

Just what planet do the people at sedbuk come from? They reckon my gas bill should be £911 PA.
My actual bill, for a 3 bed semi with uninsulated cavity downstairs, solid wall upstairs, single glazing, 30 year old cast iron boiler (76% eff), and occupied all day is between £635 and £715!!! (13-15MWh PA)
According to sedbuk I would still be paying £728 if I had a 99% efficient boiler.
If new boilers have a 10 year lifespan as quoted above then that's £250 a year just in depreciation alone, never mind the extra cost of repairing such unreliable boilers.0
