I think this scheme is a waste of time. It's impossible trying to find an installer.
  • Hi , We have no gas to our house but it is in the road , have been quoted £1200 to get it piped from street to house , is this covered under green deal or do I have to pay it ? I cant seem to get a straight answer
  • I have called every installer on the DECC website and either left messages (nobody has returned my call) or been given a variety of reasons for not being able to quote or carry out the work.

Thinking of writing to the powers that be if anyone has any contact details. Will keep this forum updated of my progress.

As a new forum user, I am unable to post links in this thread but if you are interested to see an open letter to David Cameron from a former Green Deal Installer, check out Green Heat Ltd. Makes interesting reading............

Yes, you will need to pay for it. Installing gas into a property is not directly an energy saving measure.

Can I just confirm I have this right?

I am looking at getting solid wall insulation.

    First I get an assessment.

    Then I get a quote.

    Let's say it's £10000.

The green deal give me a free grant if £3750.

I then either pay the £6250 myself (and benefit from the reduced bills) or get a loan at 10% and repay from my reduction in heating bills.

I also have to use an improved installer? So I can't do the work myself and claim for the materials etc with the grant money?

    Thanks

Yes you need an approved installer. You could get qualified yourself, but obviously that's quite a long way to go!

Fenland Council are giving a grant of £6k towards improvements including exterior cladding. Private and tenants.

My folks in Wisbech have been quoted £6100 net after the grant and expect something like £200 pa savings. (so 3.25% return on capital)

I live in one of 26 leasehold retirement flats run by a retirement association. All flats were built with cavity wall and loft insulation and double glazing. All are fitted with night storage heaters and water heaters. There is no gas on the site.
Some of us are not happy with the inability to control the night storage heaters finding that they can be too hot in the morning and cold in the evening when we then have to boost the heat with other electric fires - at the Economy 7 day rate. We would like to change to thermostatically controlled heating. The Association is not willing to change the heaters.
Given that we only need ONE of the changes I assume that we would not be eligible for the loan.
  • Hello, can anyone tell me if I pay in full can I still benefit from the Green Deal Scheme? Thanks, Elaine

As I see it Elaine, the Green Deal is a way of paying for the work over time at a higher interest rate than you can get on the open market.
If you pay for the work from savings you will make money over time.
But it seems to get the grant you have to do it via a Green Deal assessment. Some installers are also assessors and providers.
But time is against new customers, especially those needing to research and find the people to do the job. Money will run out soon and lots of folk in the pipeline.
