I started the Green deal process in April 2013 with 3 quotes for a small (25kW) Biomass boiler to replace oil, as I have free wood. They were surprisingly expensive (£15,000 to £17,000) as I was told that I could benefit from Government payments. They would NOT reduce there prices for a none Green Deal installation.

I followed up with an EPC (that needed to be corrected) then approached Anesco (a DECC approved Provider) for a Plan.

Anesco took 7 months to give a grand total is £63,000 of which £42,000 !!! was for the biomass system. They explain their price is more as the quality would be better.

All logic tells me to give up the idea of Green Deal as these prices are astronomical (A biomass boiler and accumulator can be purchased for £4000) with the addition of a few pumps etc.

I am desperately trying not to give up the Green Deal idea but each step seems to make it harder - and wondered if any other readers are experiencing similar costs?...... or know of reasonably priced or ethical installers either located or operate in North Wales?

You might be eligible for the RHI (renewable heat index) payments with a biomass boiler, tho not sure whether this would be economic for you with 1 domestic dwelling. Almost certainly would be if you had 2 though (eg an annexe or accom in same location which incurs separate Council Tax).

Can anyone clarify the following. The MSE guide states many more improvements list of 40 items. The Energy Improvement Fund online application form only lists the first 11 itemised list to then choose two items from. I want to replace oil boiler and heating controls for new oil condensing boiler and room thermostat which are on the 40 many more improvements list. Are these actually eligible? If they are there is no place to select them on the official application form.
The 40+ improvements is the "traditional" Green Deal.

The 11 improvements is the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund (GDHIF) which is a separate scheme.

The MSE article here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/green-deal?_ga=1.242355010.1163520335.1370259598 is mostly about the former. Point 7 addresses the latter.
  • They fixed the site, now a new hurdle prove you own the house, you have 2 hours to comply, of course I carry around solicitors letters from 15 years ago everywhere I go.
  • I've been speaking to Lovely Gary this morning from Ripley (who is customer liaison for a well-known locks and alarm company that has expanded into doors) with a view to getting external doors replaced.

I'd been unable to find a Green Deal supplier/provider/installer here so hoped his company, having national reach, might be able get involved. Until I mentioned the scheme, they'd never heard of it, which in itself seems odd. (I would have thought the Gov would have been keen to get these improvements offered to the widest audience possible?) On investigation, he discovered that the Gov would charge them £12K plus lots of red tape to associate themselves. Understandably, they declined.

This is why this scheme is turning out to be a bit of a postcode lottery.

I'm not sure what this could mean for the housing market too. Is the perception of an energy efficient property able to outweigh the implications of taking on a loan attached to the property? Given the choice, I presume buyers would prefer a property upgraded but unincumbered; with so many IFC deals out there, it may make sense to take that route instead and protect your property value. (Not to mention what your mortgage lender may have to say about it...)

Rip off - cost of buying internal insulation for solid walls and fitting it ourselves was less than £1k - yet to be eligible for any help you have to use an approved installer and spend thousands - hardly moneysaving.

hi, i am fed up of trying to get greendeal company to help with this,, they are very keen to sign you up for cavity wall and loft insulation, but when it comes to this , they keep fobbing off, promising return phone calls, passing thru to different depts and people etc.
one of my bedrooms is very cold and have problems with mould and condensation, i think it would be better if we did diy on this like you have done.
please give some advice and information as to how you did this as i do not know where to start

    thanks in advance
    Nice to save.
  • Sorry, but 2 very basic questions.

Is it correct that Green Deal is a loan which has to be repaid through the electricity bills ?

Is the Home Improvement Fund of Green Deal a lump sum payment or is that a loan as well ?

    Hi

My brother has 3 old & draughty double glazed windows (possibly due to worn/faulty hinges). He is on ESA & has household income of under £16000.

Can he get a grant via this scheme, as opposed to a loan?

He doesnt need loft insulation or a boiler. Thanks.

  • That is a surprise at this level of funding I was going to pick up a voucher and only possibly use it.

At 6K it was ok, at 4K it is very marginal.
