  • Pretty much all laptops these days come with webcams, so its a bit weird they haven't skyped. I wouldn't be comfortable with meeting people off the internet without having skyped, let along going to america!

I reckon the 'mother' is actually the person he's been talking to all along! I can quite easily be believed to be my mother (I'm 28, she's 48) on a phone call so I'd be very wary.

And through personal experience, every person I've met from online has been who they said they are, this just doesn't sound quite right though sorry

Have they spoken on the phone at all? Does he have her phone number?

Pictures and microphone chat is fine but really she could be anybody! Cheap webcams are easy to come buy, a quick Google search shows ones available for $8.00 at Walmart.

Travelling to another country to meet someone you've only seen pictures of, seems really dodgy.

Webcams have been around in the UK for about 12/13 years, and for much longer than that in the States.

They have been around over here since the mid 90's at least. I remember using one. It was awful.

Has he checked out her address on Google Earth? And the place she works at?
Why is her mum picking him up and not her?

Or at the very least her Mum and the girl he's meeting. This reminds me of the guy in Middlesbrough who murdered the young girl called Ashleigh Hall. He pretended to be some handsome younger guy and said his Dad was coming to collect her. And that was all lies.

As other people have said, it a. worries me that she doesn't have a webcam and they haven't Skyped, but b. it worries me that your son seems fine with this and still wants to meet her despite never seeing her?

Also, if this is legit, and everything does seem fine, the chances of their relationship working out are slim to none due to the American rules on immigration. So I would be preparing your son for this if I were you.

It was Darlington , and this was awful. Her poor family. It was all lies. You cant be too careful. I think it made youngsters around here more aware.

I hope that this girl is genuine and that your son has a safe and enjoyable time in the States. From what we have been told though he sounds a young 20 without too much experience of travelling.

I agree with the poster who suggested booking into a hotel for the first night and meeting this girl in a public place. If he feels happy and safe he can then choose to travel to her home.

If things are not as they seem and he gets into hot water would he know how to get out of it? Worst case scenario if he became seperated from his wallet, passport, mobile phone etc does he know who to contact so he can get back home to the UK?

Also make him very aware of the laws that are in place in the State he is visiting regarding drinking and dating etc. This is not being interfering or overprotective it is necessary to ensure your son has the trip of a lifetime.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.
