  • Just to update on our previous post: we were sweating at the airport holding our reference number from our telephone reservation but we had no problems. Total cost was 324 euros for 14 days including full tank of petrol, second driver and child seat for a 1.4 5-door fiesta.

We also found out you can book through Avis with a debit card but they are more expensive, even with our Toys-r-us Gold Card (their loyalty points card) voucher.

Would definitely recommend ringing the airport rentals office of goldcar.es direct. They speak English and are very helpful. You also pick the car up direct from airport car-park area.

  • Hi, i booked a holiday in puerto banus, marbella, costa del sol via fun in sun. co.uk in july 2009 but couldnt get car hire because i dont own a credit card. Funinsun.co.uk was very helpful with this problem and advised me that AVIS card hire do in fact accept a Visa Debit card. Not only was Avis the cheapest but there was no hidden extras and also had no problems at all with using the DEBIT VISA. Thank you funinsun.co.uk for saving my holiday.

i have had the same problem myself but i have found a company that will take debit card ( carjet.com ) find the car you want then go to the booking page, you need to choose the pay via fax option. this will send you a form to print and fax to them with the option of credit card or debit card. i also phoned them just to make sure this was ok. the only other thing you have to pay for is the fuel, you pay for this when you collect the car at the airport ( also with your debit card ), it comes with a full tank which you have to pay for but you must take it back empty as you get no refund for unused fuel.
p.s your debit card has to be a visa debit.
p.p.s the price you see on the screen is what you pay ( no extra deposit, i have booked a 5 seater car £167 and thats it )
    hope this helps everyone

  • This didn't dawn on me at all, until i had paid for flights and hotel and then tried to book the hire car! We're going to Gran Canaria in the first week of Jan 2010 and i need a car from the airport to get where we're going but i just keep getting the same thing, valid credit card...

I have a Visa debit card but its an Electron and i know some places are funny about taking them (poor mans debit card). I'm wondering how it would work if you had a pre-paid credit card, there's loads of them about now.

If anyone can suggest a company to use or if anyone has used a pre paid card your comments would be welcome.
  • We used Malagacar.com, as no details of card etc are taken online.
At the time, we didnt have a credit card, only debit cards.
However, we had applied & were waiting for a credit card purely for the car rental purpose.
Due to the Christmas post, the credit card never arrived in time for our 1st Jan departure, disaster!!!!
We arrived in Malaga, presented a debit card (ready to feign ignorance if questioned), this was accepted with a cursory glance, and we completed the transaction in cash.
A very reliable, decent company. No hidden charges, efficient & definitely will be using again!
I realise this only applies to Malaga, but am certain many independent local companies operate in a similar manner, so good luck! :A  :j
  • hi,
i would like to share my experience too,

We couldn't book a car in malaga airport on 2009 when me and my family were looking to find a car there! We have found a broker economycarrental which needed a deposit and a valid credit card (not even a debit card)...
Although this year we booked our car hire in crete with just rental center rental-center-crete.com , which had a "pay on arrival" option. I emailed them to ask if there was a possibility to pay cash upon delivery, and they told me that I could do, and showing a credit card was not obligatory...
I guess, people in Greece are doing a much better job than the Spanish...
  • Also can anyone help me, need to hire a car in Alicante also have no credit card, but do have Visa debit card. Any help would be gratefully recieved

Thanks for the carjet.com suggestion! Spent the morning frantically trying to find a car, after having read the small print on my previously booked car from S*L-M*R.
(I am travelling in 48 hours!) They DO NOT accept debit cards. Just taken a 25Euro cancellation hit from them. D'oh.

Rang around for two hours trying loads of companies to no avail, till I typed "no credit card car rental" in the search here, and up came carjet.

Explained the situation of NO credit card. Not a problem. Used my Visa Debit.

77 Euro for 6days in Majorca. Maybe slightly above the going rate, but... they saved my skin!

Did I read that right? 77 euro for 6 days?!!!
