TECHNICAL PROBLEM - Editing old post titles

If you try and edit a title of a post from before the "blocking" of E: DD/MM started you hit this problem. If the title is left with E: DD/MM in, then any change you make affects the post title but leaves the thread title (forumdisplay) unchanged.

    example:

Original Title: E: 28/02 Win a holiday to France

Edited to E: 28/02 Win a holiday to Germany

In the forum list and in searches it will show France but when you open the thread it will show Germany

well that's (even more) rubbish :(

This is actually a long standing problem that has been mentioned a few times in the past. Seemingly, after an unspecified length of time, the title is no longer available to edit by anyone but the BG's. I have come across it a few times when trying to amend End Dates when comps have been extended. I could amend the post but needed BG help to also update the thread title.:(

I've just sorted by title & I'm currently entering those E: 01/02 like I always have, & it looks so pretty :rotfl: Seriously. Nice & organised, easy to read.

Then you go to the first page...

I just wish they had overlapped it until all teething problems were rectified. Smooth changes wouldn't have been nearly as bad.

Better still - they could have consulted with, maybe, 10 of the top forum users/posters & gone through all the elements that would need for it to work (ie. Laks for her posting, Gilla for weeklies, One-Eye for the technical aspects etc. etc.). MSE have come in blind - have no idea how things really work & now everyone, even non end-date compers, are suffering!

    Works, Spanner, in, throwing :rotfl:

I have just spotted a MAJOR advantage to the new system!

If you have done a few days in advance because you are going away or are busy for example, you can easily miss any newly posted ones that end soon. I have just realised that the new sort puts them in order of being posted with the most recent last. Therefore you can go to the end of that date and catch any you missed with ease! I love that!

So dear, dear MSE bods, please let us keep our thread naming convention and let it work alongside your fab new system! ok? good, sorted then :money:
That ain't working! That's the way to do it, money for nothing and TV's for free ;)
  • Couldn't have they set up a trial/test board and let members beta test any changes, via mse labs or something?

    Hi Bob,

This particular problem is new today and is to do with the routine to block E: DD/MM posts. The original problem only happened with very old posts (over 2 months old) - see my thread on Site Feedback HERE where we explored this.

Try editing the title of one of your recent posts eg. THIS ONE (6 days old) leaving the E: DD/MM in and you will see the problem.

I want to point out that I have no problem with the change. I have a problem with the fact that:
    a) we (the forum users) had no input,
    b) it's not even at a usable stage,
    c) the old system has been removed & it's all in a mess.

If there were benefits then I'd get on with it, happily. Just don't see any at all atm.

Agreed. No issue with the new system, my issue is with actually banning us from using the old one in conjunction with it.
    2008: £783.12 - 2009: £6,401.15 - 2010: £4,230.61 - 2011: £8720 - 2012: £2,041.89
    2013: £134.96
  • This is such a fail.

Agree with all of that! It looks like it could be a great idea, but not in it's current state for lots of reasons!

Also agreed! It seems a quite frankly ridiculous way to go about it, what was the harm with using the old system alongside it?

I still think the best option is to merge the 2 systems (if possible? - I'm sure it must be somehow, especially if they can actually stop you typing something specific in the title!) so you've got the end date in the format so the sort button will sort it the way it does now, all the months comps together - rather than all the 1st all the 2nd all the 3rd etc., so that putting the end date in the post the new way puts it into the title, that would surely solve all the problems people are having?
