FAULT - Thread title not changed in forum listing when edited

Here’s something for the MSE techies to investigate. It’s not particularly important in this particular case, but it is a fault and should not happen. There are cases where it would be important. Is this a one-off glitch or a more serious fault?

2 weeks ago I edited the title of this thread due to a change in terms and conditions. See where marked by the arrows showing the change and the date it was done.

In the forum main listing the thread appears with the old title:-

It's not actually a 'fault' as such.
There is a default timeout in the forum software for the editing of thread titles.
After that timeout expires, any modification of the title by editing the first post will just change the title displayed on that first post, and not the thread title displayed on the board.vBulletin_manual wrote:Time Limit on Editing of Thread Title
This setting is the number of minutes in which a user may edit the title of a thread that he starts, and have it apply to the thread listing screen (forumdisplay).
After this time period, the change will only apply to the title shown in the first post of the thread. (Administrators and moderators with permission may always edit the title of the thread as shown on forumdisplay through the Edit Thread function.)
I've no idea how long that is set to here?
So I suppose the question is, should that time be lengthened from it's current setting or perhaps disabled altogether?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks fermi - it's a logical reason with such a massive forum. You can see by my screen shot that the thread was six months old when I had to change it.
If I have to make an important change to an older thread I will PM a BG to ensure the change is registered.0 -
Hello One-eye,
Thread title and post title data is stored in 2 separate locations. Because you have only edited the post title and not the thread title; you have only updated 1 of 2 locations where the information is stored.
If you believe it is important that this be changed; please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com with your request.

Because you have only edited the thread title and not the post title;
I think you got that the wrong way round.
One-Eye would have been editing the post title, as that is all you can do once the timeout has expired.
Before the timeout has elapsed, doing that would also update the thread title.
After the timeout, just the post title would change.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Considering that amending a thread title is something that users quite frequently want to do on these boards, perhaps increasing the limit from it's current setting might be an idea?
Or if not, then perhaps adding something to the forum FAQ explaining:
- How to edit a thread title.
- The length of time after posting the thread that you will be able to do that for.
- That after that time has elapsed, if you wish to change a thread title then you can ask a BG to make the change.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

this thread posted 21/06, and would have been posted with an end date, was edited yesterday by OP when the comp ended early, so maybe default is 1 month??

Thanks to everyone for all the info.
I just did a little test on a post I make every week. In all cases I changed the word "multiple" to "unlimited". The results extract below shows that for approx 2 months the "forumdisplay" has also been updated, but for the older posts only the "thread title" has updated.
I agree with fermi in post #7 that it would be good for the limit to be increased, but failing that its operation should be explained somewhere.
In an unrelated matter, in fermi's post #5 the very top of the first picture is a parameter set at 30 seconds. Is this the time limit between posts? If so can I refer to my post from February in the technical suggestions sticky where I ask for this to be reduced:-

I would really, really appreciate it if this was set at about 20 seconds.0
