I'm feeling pretty dismayed about this. I too was stranded in faro, should have flown home on the 15th of April Ryanair delayed our flight until the 28th of April. We filed our reasonable expenses and got just £150 back. £150 for a couple. How they tout we could survive for almost two weeks on that it beyond me. If anyone has any advice for me on how I can get the rightful compensation I am entitled to please let me kow.

At the time, I had them and kept copies (sent originals to Ryanair). They still felt that we only deserved £150. Do you think that's fair, is it just feeli we are entitled to more than we are?!

Thank you for your advice. In my case, do you think I should write to Ryanair again referencing everything. After today's ruling would I stand a chance of getting further compensation or would it be wasting my time?
  • "Eyjafjallajokull" is, presumably the expletive used by O'Leary when he found he had lost!

I don't have my boarding card or flight tickets but I do have the itinerary from the travel agents. Will I still be able to claim from TUI? It was a package holiday 2 years ago.

It is astonishing that Ryanair manages to stay airborne. They seem to work harder at alienating their customers than at befriending them. Their determination to wrest money out you at every turn is extremely irritating and in some instances absolutely dishonest. But ESPECIALLY BEWARE of booking car hire through them. I booked a Hertz car in Mjorca through Ryanair. The car was supplied with a full tank of petrol - which is charged out separately on collection of the car by Ryanair at £70. There was no notice of this on the internet booking so it came as a complete surprise. The car is to be returned to Hertz with an EMPTY tank - which Hertz then refill for the next customer with the £70 charged by Ryanair. How do you guage that in an unfamiliar car? Who is going to risk attempting to drive a hire car back to an airport to catch a flight in a foreign country so as to arrive with an empty tank, or even near empty ?
I hired the car for 6 days and did a lot of driving, but still did not use half the tank of fuel. The car was very economical on fuel. Ryanair got the value of more than £35 of my money because I did not use all the fuel. As far as I am concerned this is just a form of theft, fraud , call it what you will, it is downright dishonesty.
I would not have felt so hard-done-by had the flight been cheap. The cost of flying with them is similar or greater than with competing national airlines. A 2 seat 'cheap' off season flight between Manchester and Majorca with them ended up at nearly £700 by the time they had added all their little charges on. The base cost seemed cheap enough, but by the time the whole internet booking exercise had been gone through it was more costly than booking a package holiday, flights and hotel included - and I was booking my own accommodation and onward travel. Charging card processing fees for every passenger as opposed to for the single card payment for all the passengers is just outright theft. Will I ever fly Ryanair again ? I have been stung once. Ryanair will not get a second chance. Not only that, but there will be many colleagues and friends who will not now give them a chance either because I am bad-mouthing them all over the block and helping them find better, cheaper flights. To add insult to injury the Ryanair staff seem dispirited and bad tempered. They present as sullen, surly and 'up for a fight'. How long before the penny drops with all the other disgruntled users of this airline and they cease to get bookings?

If you can find a BA/Air France ticket (to ANYWHERE ON THE PLANET) for less than £20 please let us know. This is why people are prepared to forego 'extras' and choose Ryanair. Unfortunately, due to this ruling tickets will need to be increased. Its completely immoral that airlines taking people around Europe for 40 euros should be made to pay out 400. I bet there are unscrupulous passengers who cheer when a delay flashes up on a monitor and try and deliberately stall a flight by arriving at the gate late. Many flight delays are actually caused by pampered passengers themselves, showing up 1 minute before departure with a bulging 'hand luggage' trolley case, laptop bag, briefcase, handbag, umbrella, shopping etc. severely delaying boarding. Yeah I'm talking to you first class BA passengers. It's not quite as bad as in the US, but its getting close!

Oh and your car rental contract lies with Hertz. Ryanair was just a third party who offered you the convenience of paying for various services all in one booking. It's YOUR responsibility to research the reliability of car rental companies. If you don't like Hertz, choose someone else. :wall:

Umm, how many passengers on any given flight have actually paid less than £20?

First class passengers on BA go to the airport 5 hours early to eat in the Concorde Room, so they are very unlikely to be the cause of your delay.

I was stuck in Valencia, Spain during the ash cloud disruption and eventually managed to get back to the UK having been rescued by the Royal Navy in Santander. Had I not been, my expences would have been much, much higher.

I submitted my claim (approx 400 pounds) to Ryanair who refused to pay. They gave no explanation, simply said no.
I contacted them again by fax, sending copies a second time and again requested they pay up. They ignored the corespondence.

In light of yesterday's ruling what can I do now to recover the costs? I still have all the original receipts, together with the original fax recepts too. And if they ignore me again, what can I do? It has become for me now a matter of principle, not just money.
