    But if the OP had been a Newbie, the word Troll would have been screamed by now.
    I just don't understand why anyone would start a thread like this then disappear.

    Until advised otherwise, view this as unlawful entry. Call the police.
    Its possible this was a gas meter change due to debt. This involve a gas fitter who will call a locksmith to gain entry if needed. If this was the wrong address the meter fitter would have known from the serial number on the meter. The OP wouldn't of received letters as her gas debt is being managed.
    If this is the case demand and expect compensation.

    OP. Suggest your neighbours note registration numbers or take pictures in future

    Calls to the police 101 number cost 15p regardless of call length. Just wait.
