I'm planning on joining OVO on a prepayment plan as MSE's Cheap Energy Club recommended it.

Am I likely to experience any problems with this company on a prepayment plan?

Experiences posted here seem to suggest that most problems arise with Ovo when you wan't to leave them. They seem to take it as a personal insult that you would want to leave and then they start behaving like spoilt children.

  • I am not impressed with Ovo at all. When joined they estimated my bill and debited a £70 deposit from my account so I was in credit. Fourteen days later the direct debit for £70, an amount they set came out. Then £60 came out from E on as Ovo had read read the wrong gas meter and charged me for gas that they had not supplied. In 3 weeks I paid £200. I alerted them of their mistake. Six weeks after joining my gas supply finally began with them by which time I owed E on another bill and Ovo still had my original deposit and first £70 bill and billed me a second time for gas they had not yet supplied.
When I adjusted the direct debit amount myself to recoup some the now £300 in 6 weeks bill they did not like it.
I did renew with them in November 2016 only to discover that despite sending me a contract for the Better energy tariff my bills showed that only the electricity was on this this tariff and the gas was being charged at a higher rate. They have just adjusted my bill to credit £30 however this morning I received a debt collection letter for £153, minus the £30 it will be £123 which I will now pay when I have calculated my usage to make they are right because I do not trust them. When they cost me £300 in 6 weeks I wish I could have given them the same treatment.
  • I left OVO last month, as I managed to move over to pay monthly. I had no major issues with OVO and any little problems were normally ironed out within a very short period of time.

When I left them, I had £72 on my balance. Two days later, a cheque for £72 was on the doormat.

I only left OVO because I managed to get onto pay monthly and thus much better rates. I cannot speak for their pay monthly, but would wholly recommend them for PAYG.
  • Been with OVO for 11 months and just been informed as my fix is coming to an end, the best they can come up with is a 32% increase on pay monthly. Which I'm particularly unhappy about so I'll be leaving. A shame, as I've generally been very happy with the service.

If it is a 32% increase - and I am not suggesting that it isn't - then I hear echoes of the GBEnergy collapse. It implies that a supplier may not have been able to buy forward enough energy - at a competitive price - to meet future customer demand. I hope that I am wrong as Ovo is one of the better small (but not that small) suppliers.

  • I had a few minor niggles with Ovo but couldn't fault them when it came to the important things - regular, accurate bills and a prompt refund when I left.

If their prices become competitive again, I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

    Been with them twice.
They messed up the transfer twice - three months to start charging me for my gas usage!

They changed my DD without asking - then continued taking payments after I had left.

    Awful company.

I have also been with Ovo twice. My first contract with them was without fault. Unfortunately, my second contract resulted in me being charged for electricity that I hadn't received from them, and a cancelled gas switch. This was down to a computer glitch where the IT system concluded that as a returning customer, I hadn't actually left!! This took 3 months to resolve. The good points are their billing system and account closure. CS was better than most but not as good as some. I would return if the prices worked out for me: at the moment, Ovo is not that competitive.

  • I switched from edf to ovo about 3 months ago on a pay as you go contract. Haven't had any issues and they were extremely accommodating when arranging my smart meter installation. I particularly like the fact that you can access your account from an app.
A big bonus for me is being able to top up my gas and electric on my phone from anywhere, also they automatically switch you to emergency and inform you when you will be cut off if you don't top up
I have to say I'm very please.
