  • Interesting. I had received a communication some months ago which said it was a requirement of the regulator that they stop and with a different date (?July)
Did you challenge OVO about it? If so, how did they respond? Did you stay with them?

If you are on a fixed contract and Ovo want to vary it then I think they have no choice but to let you change supplier without charge. There might be a time frame within which you should switch so watch out for that.
The notice from OVO states that they will not levy exit fees if you switch before 31st December 2020 (my fixed term ends 19th February 2021) so I have now joined MSE's autoswitch and started the switch process so should be complete within that time frame.
I did send OVO an email about their decision this morning but, given that I consider their decision to be based purely on a desire to increase charges and not, as they claim, on a desire to be 'fair' to all their customers, I decided they are no longer the company that they used to be (I have been with them since they started up) so it is time to go. The info from dirtmother (above) only serves to confirm to me that this decision - and the reasons behind it - are based on financial rather than other reasons. If they had just been honest and stated that they needed to cancel the discount for financial reasons it would have been an easier pill to swallow (an increase of £60 p.a. on energy is not that much of a hike), but deceitful and underhand activity is not the mark of a company I want to deal with. Time to go.

Theyve just sent me a cheque from 2017! Haven't been with them for years! Well done
  • No, haven't challenged them but of course it is a factor in assessing whether it makes financial sense to stay. Not bothered about the principle (bit of a relief in a way!)

Ovo must be the worst company for customer service.
Since I joined them in September 2020 I have had to make so many complaints, about my smart meter not working, told different stories about why it did not, including  parts being sent to me, that were not. Checked to make sure I was getting a visit by an engineer, and told yes, but did not come.
I changed to them through the Cheap Energy Club, and was expecting a payment from then for using the switch.
Ovo seem to think I am not their customer!!  Cheap Energy Club waiting over a month for a reply from OVO.
They even sent numerous bills just showing the standing charge. I had to keep phoning them to get a proper bill for my usage.

Hi alas21 and welcome to the forum.
I agree they don't seem to be doing too well at the moment.
I don't quite understand why they are sending you bills if you are not their customer. :/

ovo have introduced a new tariff aimed at electric car users. If you fit an ovo car charger you are eligible for a tariff equivalent to 1p per mile for charging your car. Any feedback on this?

It's meaningless without knowing (i) how they've calculated that it's equivalent, and (ii) what the rest of the tariff is like.

Compulsory to have a particular dual fuel tariff with OVO, gas 12 month fixed is more expensive than Ovo 24 month fixed albeit kwh rate cheaper than Octopus 24 month fixed gas kwh rate, not compulsory to have gas tariff with Octopus if on Octopus Go, peak rate E 16.45pkwh Ovo compared with 15.78p kwh Octopus Go based on my region
OVO Drive is dual fuel (electricity and gas) only
Standing charge: 32.87p/day  Gas - very high
    Standing charge: 29.93p/day  E  -   Octopus Go 25p
