  • I applied to switch to Eon via the MSE energy club and recieved an email on 28/9/16 to say my switch was in progress. As of last Wednesday I heard nothing else so I sent Eon an email. They got back to me today to say that they have no record of that address switching o ef and I should contact MSE or ring them. Any advice please as the my energy club account is still showing that the switch is in progress.

Hello Dunenergy and welcome to the Forums.

Possibly an issue with the address held by the national databases. Suppliers use these databases when switching accounts. I'd check with your current supplier that the address details are right. Also check the meters are correctly logged on the databases too. If there's a discrepancy, only the current supplier can arrange to have the databases updated.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for the reply Malc. I phoned Eon and they requested my MPRN and MPAN numbers last week along with my postcode. Still yet to hear anything back yet.

EON itself has been fine for the last year that I was with them. Like others I have actually just left them (Not because of bad service) but because their tariffs that are available to me are not the cheapest.
Sad to say I am also in the process of switching away from E.On for the same reason, having initiated the switch a little over a week ago. I have been very pleased with them for the last not quite a year - the way the billing system works, and especially the controls on DDs. The switch to E.On last year was the first time I have ever done a switch so the support from the E.On representative here on this forum was very valuable, so I'd like to thank (I think it was) Malc mainly.

There is no indication as yet on the E.On account page that a switch is underway but I guess this is because the cooling off period is still current.

You're welcome Dunenergy. Happy to help.

I suspect you're in the cooling off period. We'll contact you 7 days from when the switch started to let you know what's happening. This will be from when you contacted us rather than when you first asked to change on 28 September. Providing, that is, the National Databases I mentioned the other day hold the right details for your property. Did you ask your current supplier to check this?

Drop an email to the address in my Profile if you would like me to see where we're at.

Morning savetilibleed and sorry to lose you. Glad things went well whilst you were with us and thank you for your kind words. They're appreciated.

As you say, sounds like you're in the cooling off period. We'll be in touch before this ends to let you know where the switch is at. Certain aspects of the website will be suspended once we receive the new supplier's application to take over the account. This includes entering meter readings and altering any monthly payments through the Direct Debit Manager.

    Hope this explains.

  • WARNING RE METER READING
I recently switched (as part of the energy club) from EON to Sainsburys Energy. When we were with EON they came and fitted a SMART Meter. (Not so smart)
When I gave my meter reading to Sainsbury's, on Saturday they said according to my reading I had used £400 plus of energy since the switch in the last quarter. (My estimated usage for the year is £580) To cut a long story short and with the aid of a very nice lady from Sainsbury's Customer Care Team (Highly recommended) It turns out that when you read an EON "SMART" meter you have to divide the reading by eleven, that then gives you a true reading of the energy used. The lady from Sainsbury's also told me that it appears the last reading I gave EON when I switched has not been divided by eleven by EON, something they know they should do.So it may mean they owe me money. (Hopefully, i'll update this in a couple of weeks with a smile on my face)?
Anyway the point of this post is, who else out there has had the same happen to them, or you may not even be aware this has happened to you, it will be interesting to find out. If there are any other threads relating to this apologies, I am not a regular forum user.

Edit: Thinking about this some more, I think that you may have been misled. On switch, E.oN will have had your ACTUAL smart meter reading. The reading on your smart meter will be in CM3s but to give you a kWh reading on the in House Display this reading has to be multiplied by 11.2. When taking a meter reading from a smart meter that is not communicating with the supplier, this needs to be read off the smart meter.

Hi - welcome to the forum. I am not sure that I understand what you are saying. I assume that smart meters are metric. Electricity is just a straight read: that is, one meter reading taken away from another is the amount electricity used in kWhs.

Gas is more complicated: the calculation goes like this. Units used (taken from the meter) x 1.02264 x 39.1* divided by 3.6 equals kWhs of gas used.

*NB: the figure of 39.1 varies with the calorific value of the gas supplied.

Broadly, you will get the same result by multiplying the units of gas used by 11.2.

More likely that the wrong reading was given, smart meters still read in m3 but also give a kWh figure.

Hello CharlieGIRL and welcome to the Forums.

Have to say, I'm a bit confused by what you've been told. As Hengus says, the electricity reading is taken straight from the meter. There's nothing to divide. The gas is different and, I suspect Hengus is right, and the information you've been given refers to converting the amount of gas used from cubic metres to kWh.

Meters measure gas used in either cubic metres or cubic feet. It's then converted into kWh using the formula Hengus has posted (for metric meters like smart). Gas is then billed in kWh. A quick way of checking is by multiplying the number of units of gas by 11.2.

Even given this, the readings we'll have used on our final bill wouldn't have been determined by us. With a change of supplier, it's the responsibility of the new supplier to let the old supplier have the meter readings they open their account to. The old supplier uses the same readings to close their account. This stops the same energy from being charged twice. These readings also go through a third party who checks they're in line with past usage held for the property. This process is the same for all suppliers involved in a switch.

Check that our closing and the new suppliers opening readings are the same. If they are, our final bill will have charged the right amount of energy used.

Sorry if this seems a bit vague but, to be honest, I'm struggling to understand what you've been told.
